this is the kind of thing that just drives me wild . first of the week had someone ask me to paint a camaro then tell me how it had to be done. then i read this from another site.

need a 57 truck painted
Anyone painting vehicles in the Reading or Allentown, PA areas? I'm getting quotes from $4,000 to $10,000, but only have $2000 budget. Body is in good condition with a few small rust spots needing fixed and some previous body work needing redone.

lol i get that all the time. "ol boy over there in X town does it this way" ...i tell them my name aint "ol boy" and this aint his shop.

God has a sense of humor....thats why these people exist....lol.

Today's my birthday, I just had a few too many cold ones, and before I call it a night I thought I'd check the forum, ALWAYS something interesting and worth paying attention to is posted.

And you just made my day with these words, I couldn't possibly agree more, thank you sir for having a sense of humor too, and thank you for posting the awesome work that you do at your shop.

:D

How many Texan kicks did it take to remove the guy from your driveway? I am betting on just 1 :grin

let's just say i dont think he will be calling me again. i try to be nice but when someone starts telling me how to do my job that is where it ends. i'm sick of google warriors . this guy has been reading the bs on line and knew everything. i do not cut in cars then build and paint. haven't in many years and not going to start.

Try and remember that most people don't have a clue about car paint,
it's ignorance, not stupidity, so I try to cut them some slack.
I try to explain everything hoping they'll better understand, most do.
Some don't.
The ones that don't are the ones I don't do work for.
It's a great "weeding out" tool

my customers are different. they know full well what it takes and they know it cost more than a repair on the daily driver. this guy has most likely spent in excess of 40k so far on high dollar engine/trans stuff plus all the powder coated this and that. but he never got to the cost. instead he wanted to tell me how it had to be done . after 4 times telling me i couldn't match the colors painting it in pieces i told him what he could do with it. i'm sure i'll see him whining on the camaro or chevy talk sites.

Well Shine, he has his "opinion" (LOL)
We all can tell some stories I'm sure,
I have some good ones too, I guess that's the
drawback of dealing with the public.
My still all time favorite customer question is
"how cheap can you paint my car?"
I've got some good answers to that one.

As I learned the hard way, there are a lot of shops out there that do poor quality work, but proudly charge top dollar. On my 34, one shop did a half way job on my front fenders, and another I caught using Turbo on large areas of bare metal and filler with 40 grit air file scratches. They caught the back of my car on fire and claim to not know what happened to cause all the burnt paint on my frame. The list goes on and on from these two experiences. This kind of thing gives the guys doing the job right a bad name. It takes a lot to trust someone else with your car. So far I've had to redo everything I paid to get done.

Strum, your experiences are common, sad but true. As you're finding out by doing it yourself it does take a lot of time and dedication to do the job right but the rewards are great. I wish a forum like this was available years ago.

Shine, most people can't panel paint metalic colors in pieces and get a perfect match but you've proven it's not a problem-surprised you couldn't straighten him out on that with a guarantee or examples of your work but if he's that bull headed maybe it's a good job to lose...

he was just one of those types. if he came back monday and said ok i still would not do his work. he would never never be satisfied . there are some colors that i dont think i would trust to match. especially the new tricoats . but even then i would color everything then do a good coat of clear. hang the parts then check. if need be i will block and do a tie coat then blow it apart and reclear . it really depends on the car and what is being done. but any solid or one color job i will usually do in pieces . i have one coming up this winter that will have to be done together because of the color. it's going to be an old school type of color effect which will be a pia to pull together.

I had a good one last week along this line of unbelievable. I ran into a retired teacher from the community college that I went to 15 years ago. He remembered me and we were shootin the shit when I told him that I restored cars for a living. Well, he has an early 70's porsche that the motor is being done on now but he wanted it painted. He asked me if he can bring it by for an estimate and I said sure if you can wait 6months to a year. The very next thing out of his mouth was "are you any good?" At that point being a humble person I didn't know what to say. I can tell you I will shock him out the door if he ever brings the car in. People like this I usually make them name their price that way I can judge if we are on the same planet.

Most Porsche owners think the engine is the expensive part. $4,200 for cylinders, pistons and sleeves, throw in $1,500 for new connecting rods and they don't blink an eye. Five grand for the paint job materials is just plain crazy. Ask him if he wants you to throw a little pearl in the paint -- for $800 more.

Even a lousy painter is going to be expensive. How bad a job do you want?

It does get old when people expect a quality paint job or body restoration to be turned out in a week or two because they saw it on TV. Attempts to explain that quality work doesn't happen in those time frames are usually met with the "they have a TEAM that does this" response. Team or not, I want to see that car up close 5 years down the road. The owners will have sold it long before that anyways.

Car warriors is a good example. They just aired a summary show of all the cars and antics building them. They chose the custom 240z as the best one. When they panned the side of the car the clear had no shine and the peel and trash was evident. Granted, the show is a 72 hour race but it makes people think that quality custom work is easier than it really is.

that show is rediculous...i dont understand what the whole thing is about this crazy time limit. hell overhaulin got a week...day and night and i know a guy who has seen one of those cars up close months after completion...looked like a dried up prune! i kinda enjoyed that one.

there is no time limit on quality, sorry.

ive been asked twice in the last month, "its already primered can you paint over it?" i say "bare metal, or stock paint job, otherwise youre stripping it or paying me to"...i smile , they frown...
