Universal Lesson learned

Yesterday I sprayed UV clear on my door. First two coats were the best coats I ever sprayed and I was quite happy and thinking I finally got this figured out, but then on the 3rd coat it all went south. When I sprayed the 3rd coat of UV I couldn't get get it lay flat and didn't know why but soon realized I had mixed to much clear at once{16 oz. }and it was starting to kick off by the 3rd coat and made a mess. From now on only will mix what's needed per coat. So back to sanding.

Are you sure you mixed the right amount of activator?
we've all done it, got confused, used the wrong proportion, or read the wrong number
on the mixing cup, etc. just saying. It really sounds like to much activator.

According to the tech sheet, pot life should be 2-3 hours depending on some variables like temp and humidity. Given your variables I would lean towards it not being a time issue. What was your total time from mixed to 3rd coat?

What if he followed the 30 minutes between coats rule and didn't rinse out his gun in-between? What if, I'm just making this up as I go along?

Ive made every mistake so far so to much activator is certainly possible. I had bought a qt. and had activator left over so at times it appears I added too little and maybe to much at other times. thought I was being precise but apparently not. I waited 30 minutes between coats so it was 1 hr. after I mixed I sprayed the 3rd. coat. After 1.5 hrs clear left in mixing cup was hard so probably screwed up on the activator. Got a gallon of clear coming and will try again that should be enough to finish the door. ;) thanks for the responses. Much appreciated

Cleaned gun thoroughly every time. Probably screwed up on the activator

Universal Clear is the easiest clear to mix.
It's 1 to 1, so
whatever amount you use for the clear, it's the same amount for the activator.

Pot life is closer to 4 hours than 3 but I do get a call like this every so often.

Usually, it is you have an internal screen in a cup or gun.
OR
The peephole in the top of the cap is so small it's plugging. So drill out with 1/8 drill bit.
Thall all assumes you mixed the clear right.

Yes I know but somehow I messed up anyway. No excuses but I started using the 3M PPS 2.0 and the numbers on the hard cup are upside down when you mix for some reason and it got me. Before that I mixed in a ratio cup and numbers are bigger and clearer. Re-sanded the door this morning and will re-clear once my order arrives which hopefully is tomorrow.1st time painting a car and this is the 4th door I've painted even though my car has only 2 doors. :) Its been both rewarding and frustrating at times. Thanks for the response and hopefully I can learn from guys like you and others on this forum

You're supposed to look into the cup, so the numbers are opposite of you. Not through the near side.

Thanks Barry. I gonna blame this on me. Typical amateur error. You have been very helpful since I started on this endeavor. The 1st 2 coats were the best I sprayed to date and I was feeling good and then it went to hell on the third coat. I took your recommendation and bought a LPH400LV and it certainly has made a difference in my spraying once I got my gun settings figured out. Great company and great products.

That makes sense. But when you're amateur like me it doesn't take long for the cup to get covered in drips and makes it hard to see coupled with my glasses getting covered in overspray and the liners are not totally clear making it even harder to see :). I'll just use mixing cups and pour it into the PPS cup. Thanks for the advice

With that attitude you're going to be a good painter.
I seriously doubt you'll make any mistake I haven't already made, sometimes more than once.
Don't feel bad, it's the price of becoming a good painter.
I've always said
"the difference between the pro and the amateur, is that the pro knows how to fix his mistakes"
