Universal over eastwood basecoat.

Will Universal work over Eastwood basecoat. They have a nice red for my 72 Corvette. I would like to do it the SPI dark red and medium red but I can't seem to find any pictures. I used the SPI regular red on my 67 GTO but it's a little to orangy for my vette. Plus I don't want 2 cars the same red.

I have used universal over many different paints, no problem. Have not used eastwoood though. I think the safe choice if you are not sure is to let the basecoat sit overnight so you dont have to worry about the solvent pop. I am planning to make up my own base with the chevelle to try to find that stingray orange metallic from my childhood bike.

Why would you put a Eastwood basecoat on a nice car like that? Eastwood stuff especially paint products are low end. It's also priced higher than low end stuff you can get at your local paint jobber.
Call Barry, he can provide color chips of all his basecoats. He makes very nice reds that are very high quality base's that will last a long time. They are also priced very competitively. The medium or dark will be almost perfect for your Vette if it's the color red I think it is. Give Barry or one of the guys at SPI a call and they can help. Alternatively there are any number of high quality basecoat's out there that will be much better than using Eastwood junk and priced less than PPG DBC.

just about any red can be mixed by a jobber. im thinkin youre lookin at the color on a monitor. it may not be the same in real life.
plus, with all of the prepwork to get it ready for paint, then wanting to use UC, why in the world skimp on the basecoat?

Chris I have used the SPI red on my GTO and would like something a little darker and more red. Something like this. If the medium or dark is close I will buy it tomorrow. I want to do the jambs later this week.

Not seeing the car in person but I can almost guarantee that the medium or dark will be very close. If I'm not mistaken GM Mille Miglia Red is one of the colors that he had in mind when he formulated his reds. Looking at the pic I'm guessing it would be the medium red.

That sounds good Chris. I would rather use your products. First off I get a sprayable 2 gallons from SPI as apposed to 1.5 gallons with eastwood. Also the last time I painted the red. I used reducer 1-1. Now I see you need to add Clear activator, why? Do I have to use it. I will call tomorrow.

For the record I have no affiliation with SPI. Just a user of their products and a fan of the Company and Barry.
Give Barry a call, he can walk you through everything.

Thats nice. But I think it's a little to dark. Maybe I will go with the medium. Thanks.

540, we make all bases in quarts also, you can blend any percentage you want to make your own.

If I were to blend my own it might be hard to touch up later. Chris said the medium is close to the color on my vette now. I will probably go with that.

then go with something simple, like 1:1. I got an old CAR MIX scale pretty cheap on ebay, dont use it for anything more than a heavier weigh gram scale. There is nothing like having something nobody else does.
