Wait time between epoxy and basecoat.

Just set for easter island one hour ahead for daylight savings.

Well almost ready to go on Monday. Remasked the car. Had to do a repair on the door. I didn't like the way it looked. Now I am going to go over the primer to get some spots I missed with 400 wet sand or grey scotch brite. Which is better. Obviously the scotch rite will be easier to do.

So, is the wait time based on Eastern or Pacific time? I'm in the Midwest. If I spray at 4pm Central and it's 5 Eastern and 2 Pacific. Which time should I go by?

Grey Scotchbrite is closer to 800 grit. The Maroon is around 400 grit.
Here's a chart.

Barry, want to make sure I interpret this correctly as this topic is applying to me right now. I sprayed epoxy as sealer with the intention of spraying the base next day. Then got sick and of course, did not shoot said base. So within 3 days, you think it's ok to shoot base on the epoxy sealer. 4-7 days needs to be sanded before spraying the base. After 7 days reshoot sealer and start over?

If vehical has not been outside your spot on.

So, with this same scenario in play, I have a question. 7 days out from when I originally shot sealer and now able to work on this again. Obviously, sanding has to happen. I have it sanded at 600 wet now. But does film thickness come in to play here with epoxy as sealer? Is it mandatory to reshoot sealer? Or can you just shoot the base over 600/800 without another coat of sealer so you don't keep adding unnecessary film build? I'm good with either. I'm either ready to reshoot sealer or to shoot my base, one way or the other.

And I guess what I'm really getting at is that I've got a really nice finish right now with only a few edge sand throughs in the existing sealer to the epoxy below. If I spray another coat of sealer, I run the risk of putting texture in it that is not there now. Am I overthinking this? :)

This is a concern of mine too. If I have the car in sanded epoxy primer, say p400, it's hard to want to shoot epoxy sealer for fear of adding texture. Hope the gurus will weigh in on this. I think once epoxy is past 7days, whether primer or reduced sealer it won't allow a bond with urethane or enamels even if sanded and has to be coated again. Correct?

Just found this post in another thread by JimC, referring to 2k primer... copied.

sealer isnt completely necessary. you can paint right over sanded [2k] primer. it has been done for years..HOWEVER, you will have better adhesion and a more even color and surface for the base to go over if you use a sealer. if you use epoxy for sealer you can mix 1:1:1 and end up with a micro thin layer that has no texture. you can use the 2k sealer as well the same way. reduce it 2 parts and spray 1 coat.
