What kind of paint chips off?

I'm stripping the hood of a 1970 Datsun 2000. I tried hitting it with 80 grit on the D/A, but it was taking too long. I switched to the heated razor blade method. That worked well, but I noticed the cold spots would chip right off. I ended up just scraping the paint cold and it is chipping off in tiny pieces, almost exploding off! It's making quite a mess, but going very quickly. Underneath is a gray primer and no body work. It shows no sign of a paint job, unless a brand new hood was installed.

Just curious if a certain kind of paint chips off like this. Most paint I've scrapped doesn't pop off this easy. Lacquer, enamel...?

lacquer. the reason to heat is it comes off in strips with less mess. get one of those chips in your eye and you will understand .

Where were you 2 hours ago!!! I definitely got a chip in my eye. Blinked it out for a few minutes, then grabbed my Uvex face shield and kept going. The heat was working well, but I could go much faster chipping it off. One push would give me a strip the entire length of the hood! It's all stripped and cleaned right now, epoxy is inducing until I have time to sneak out of the hospital (second child was born 2 days ago) and spray a coat or two.

It could be any paint. Including new bc/cc. That wasn't properly prepped. Million different reasons why paint chippsoff like that

If it (was) original paint. Good chance it was lacquer like shine said.

I was stripping this hood that had an ungodly amount of brittle clear. I used the da with 80 grit and didn't reach base for minutes in one spot. Crap was just popping off.
