why you never use POR-15 EVER!!!!

I have been redoing a 30k mile 2000 Dodge Ram 4x4 deisel dually that was bought new. It is a work truck and is used to pull when needed. This is not a show job but is being done as a no holds barred job that hopefully will last longer then the factory and prove to be better then the crap POR-15. I knew POR-15 was crap when I put it on but figured it had to be at least better then nothing. I think you will see it was probably better left alone then putting this crap on.

You can see the rocker I replaced in 2 of the photos, it held up real nicely tooo..... No sarcasum there, oh nooooo.....

Shots of the inner rocker. I POR-15'ed the insided then welded on and still self distructed in nothing flat. I would have been better off leaving it alone (raw) and welded it on

So for those wondering just how good this product is I hope you enjoyed the photos and learned something. I will be posting some pics of the "NEW" 2000 Dodge Ram done with 100% SPI products. The new frame has a 1 gallon Epoxy kit (that's 2gal sprayable) Black (6hrs of spraying), the under side of the new cab has a 2qt Epoxy kit (grey)(that's 1gal sprayable), firewall 2qt sprayable Grey Epoxy, inside the cab has 1gal sprayable Black Epoxy flodding every seem and every hole I could get the fan into paying the most attention to the floor. A new oil pan was installed on the engine (they rust out bad) after 6 coats of Epoxy were applied and dried for 5 mo. while the other work was being done. Every part of the truck was coated with Epoxy and seems were flooded.

Watch for the up and comming photos in another thread. I will leave this one for the issue at hand.

something about that POR crap-it seems when it starts letting go the rust grows at a rate far greater than if the stuff was never applied. I've peeled POR off in sheets and found the rust below was crawling and growing like crazy.

I'm not a fan of it neither. I had tried it and put over a few parts. Later changed my mind and the stuff was a nightmare to remove and the rust was worse than previously.

those of us who have warned against this junk for years have caught unholy hell from all the diy guys who swear by it . there is nothing that will cover or convert rust into a harmless substance. rust never sleeps . but still today they make their outlandish claims about this junk. i thought of using it on farm equipment but after discovering it accelerates rust i changed my mind. setting bare the rust will almost stop when dry . cover it up and you have a rust motel . i have pulled cars from fields that were solid because they were bare and had no dirt buildup in them to create a rust hotel .

Everyone who raves about POR -15 describes how hard it is. Absolutely true and I think it's the stuff's downfall. The steel you put it on moves from expanding and contracting. The POR-15 expands and contracts at a different rate and lifts off the metal just enough for condensation to form under the POR-15. It's probably the ideal product for Goth middle school kids who want black fingernails. Can't think of another use....

The only other use I can think of is it's ability to fuse the lid to the can. You will have to destroy the can and lid to get it open after use if there is any left over film of it in the lip.
There are other variants of this product which I have a 1/2 pint of called chassis black new in the can been sitting in the cabinet for a couple years. I will be happy to send it to anyone that wants it can have it.

I just have to bite my tongue on the other automotive sites I visit every time someone asks about "rust encapsulation" or the "best way to protect a frame" and someone pipes up about POR-15 or some other snake oil.

every year someone relables some kind of new snake oil and the net goes wild . i do not care what you add to phosphoric acid it is still the same thing . i use milkstone because it is cheaper and a tad stronger . pour in in a new bottle and whamo new and improved ! i first encountered phosphoric acid in 68 by watching an old painter get a car ready . of course he did not have to rinse it since it was not a big deal with lacquer/enamel back then .
you can remove rust with all kinds of things but in all my years i have never saw anything that killed, convertedor covered rust .

There are people in all parts of the world on this forum, and there are several different companies offering their own versions of Milkstone in different parts of the world. One of them in the UK uses (Methanesulphonic Acid) which is a strong acid that can cause sever burns and corroded metal---its in the sulfuric acid family.

One Milkstone product in Australia uses (Sulphamic Acid) which is also a member of the Sulfuric Acid family.

One Milkstone product in Canada uses 10-30% phosphoric acid, but also 10-30% urea hydrochloride. I'm not a chemist so I don't know what that is, but it doesn't sound good for people or metal, sounds too much like hydrocloric acid. I think Milkstone is formulated for cleaning salts.

Best to use what Barry recommends--OSPHO. JMO

Shine, what milkstone remover product are you using? It isn't a common item in my neck of the woods-there isn't much dairy business up here.

dariyland brand products . sterosol milkstone remover . 12.99 gal.. i use it in a bug sprayer after blasting if the car is bad. any farm and ranch store will have it.

true to the course there is a new rust converter being pushed . i have never seen a high end shop use a rust converter .

SPI ONLY recommends three kinds.

PPG, Dupont or the Ospho because we know what we are dealing with and all three have been out for many years and not changed with every batch made.
Don't shoot the messenger
