I wipe down my basecoat with water-based cleaner. After wiping it down I can still see streaks and spots where the cleaner has been. I then wiped it down with the solvent-based cleaner and saw no change in the basecoat. Did I just ruin the basecoat?
Never wipe down base with the water base W&GR. The solvents that are in it will bite into base.
Not a good idea to wipe base down at all but if necessary for whatever reason use only the solvent base W&GR.
I wouldn't know from here if you ruined your base coat.
I see a fair amount of discussions about wiping down basecoat, I can't think of any reasons to do such a thing! Other than a tac rag that is all I ever would put on the base before clearing.
If there is a reason please help me understand.
It should only be done if you had to fix a flaw in the base, and even then, if small enough, you may be able to get clean without.

If i am laying out graphics or something that takes a few days I'll wipe the panel down with wax and grease remover(solvent blend) before clearing just to clean up any finger prints and things that may collect while taping and masking.
