Backyard Hack
This is my 22nd build since retiring 8.5 years ago. Most were full builds but a handful were painted rollers. This will be my last customer build according to my wife…. :)

Locked and loaded ready to spray final color. It takes a fair bit of time to replace all the filters, replace the booth floor paper and give the walls a quick coat of paint.

I prefer to panel paint with the shell on the rotisserie but this color is forcing me to do things a little differently. 25% reduced epoxy sealer. Will denib and shoot base early tomorrow morning at the crack of Don… :D

Some folks say overnight it’s is too long for 25% reduced epoxy but it has worked well for me in multiple builds. Let’s me look it over real good with lights out and my sun gun to find and correct nibs and flaws.

Mandatory backyard hack disclaimer inserted here. :p

how do you paint the roof with the car on the cart....hang from the ceiling? its 845 texas time. where are the basecoat pictures....

This car has been an epic case of scope creep. Was supposed to be white with a rewire and Vintage Air. Body was supposed to be perfect. Ended up with repop quarters, minitubs, outer wheel tubs, a trunk floor, tail panel and some door corner patches. Bumpers were tucked. Frame was narrowed and boxed. EFI and a custom interior was added along with rear coilover conversion. Then to top it off he went from an easy white to Satin Steel Metallic, a GM color.

Doesn’t really pop in the booth, will see how it looks when cleared and outside. It wouldn’t have been my choice. I would have painted it black! :D He had renderings done in five colors to pick the color. He’s very picky which I didn’t pick up on when we met.

Three coats of Motobase with SPI reducer.

I have two of these, one for each side. It was all I could do to reach the center of the roof. They are on wheels but won’t move once your weight is on them which is a nice feature.

Come on Chevman, what about the 63 split window coupe! :p. I did a dark green metallic Nomad too….
Opps, I'm caught red handed. ;) Just kidding Don, Love your work, I just wish I could get a fraction of work done as you do. But I wasn't kidding about all my futher jobs being red, black, and white.

Side note, I am absolutely retarded......I have never thought to put the astro stands all the way down for fenders like that!
I have to admit I only thought of this on my last build. :). It works so much better than the folding work stands.

Well I wish I had your metal shaping skills. You are several notches above me in that regard. I am a true backyard hack when it comes to metal shaping.

They all seem to get much more picky either shortly after the job is started or most often when it's finished.

And Don 22 builds in 8 1/2 years really is prolific. I'm sure this one will look as good as all your other ones. Figured you would have tried talking him into Black SS. :p
