1965 Mustang - the SN65C project

S

Senile Old Fart

I bought this 65 coupe to put a late model engine and trans in and make the wife a fair weather dd.
By chance an apprentice from our Local called me about a wrecked 01 GT belonging to his brother in law.
Long story short - I bought it for a donor car for the 65.
Next I started researching the 4.6 engine swap. I came across Bob Jullians project the SN65. With a lot of time spent on google and right click /save as action I was able to get a hundred or so photos of Bobs project.
One thing led to another and I committed to building a low budget version of Bob's over the top SN65.

That is the story of how I got to this point. I'm not much of a photographer but I will try and keep a log of progress photos of this undertaking.

Don't expect a fast pace on this project, its been 2 years getting to it current point. I work construction and often work out of town, or 10-12 hr days, or 6-7 days a week or often all of the aforementioned to make schedule.

The plan was to do it in SPI white base and UV clear. now the wife is thinking she wants a gun metal metallic. Oh well, as we all know women are fickle.

Here is the 65 the day I bought it:

Today's task is to continue to prep the 65 to accept the 01 "chassis". Another exciting day of drilling spot welds along with measure, remeasure, then measure again before taking the skinny wheel or recip saw to it.

So if I understand this right, you are taking a uni-body and fitting it to a '01 frame?
Sounds interesting I hope you will keep posting pictures so I can follow your progress.

Yes, I am taking the "body" portion of the '65 unibody and putting it on the "frame" portion of an 01 unibody.
Then putting everything including the dash, air bags, abs, etc. into the conglomeration to be known as SN65C.
Nobody has ever accused me of being to smart, lol.

I've always wanted to do something like that. Actually I've wanted to do something far weirder, like 300ZX underpinnings on a 60's Chevy II body.

I'll be watching your project with interest!

Update, first trail fit, getting close. Need to do some cutting and fitting in the apron/cowl area yet.

That's a cool project! are you going to transfer the stock cowl top and graft it into the newer firewall? Looks like you needed two donor cars-I see different colors on the new sheetmetal. glad you didn't do the 300ZX/chevyII idea

Bob, I have used portions of 4 cars to get to this point, lol.

I purchased a wrecked 2001 GT as a donor. I knew the front clip was toast, but expected to use the rear clip portion. I purchased a front clip (green) early on to replace the totalled one .

After cutting the 2001 apart I saw there was a lot of damage to the rear suspension mounting points.
Instead of repairing the problem I went to the wrecking yard and purchased another rear clip for $75 (bright red).

I selected a location to cut and lap the 2 pans together, sanded the lap area, drilled 3/8 holes every 2", applied zinc weld thru primer. Currently it is held together with self tapping screws in every other hole.. I won't do any welding until all three pieces are set.

I have attempted to build a website to chronicle this project: http://home.comcast.net/~ozzy12r/site/

Ozzy? keep us all updated-that project will be inspiration for many.

Have you done anything else to this car? I have a 69 coupe and a chance to get an 01, been thinking about doing this with an 05 and up.

Working on it has been very slow, probably won't be able to work on it this summer, hope when winter gets here I can get back to it.
