2K primer

Guys, yesterday I mixed some 2K primer. Spayed my 1st coat with no issues. Let it flash about 7 minutes and when I went to spray the second coat it was not spraying wet? Turns out the primer was already setting up in my gun. Temps in my shop was 85 deg. The activator was 8 months old but appeared clear ?

Thanks Don. In this case I only needed about 12 oz so not sure how much retarder to add.

Yes, more flash time, but you may have to dump the primer out of the gun between coats and do a minor gun cleaning between coats to make sure the tip is not fouled with partially cured primer.

@RayH Flash times 3-5 minutes, with normal temps, are the usual. When primer is completely dull, it's ready to recoat. I don't like leaving 2K in the gun. It is a bad habit that causes issues, or worst, ruined guns. These temps right now, the 2K will go solid in less than 10 minutes

Thanks, this was the first time I didn’t clean my gun after the first coat. Since it was going to be a 15 min job figured it wouldn’t be a problem.

Once you start getting that hot it kicks faster and the retarder is a lifesaver. You can add up to 3 oz per quart and if you’re not spraying an entire quart then scale it back proportionally.

I have a tablespoon I use for adding small amounts of stuff like this. A table spoon is 0.5 oz. Lately I’ve been using about 2 oz per quart. I’ll add more if needed.

You might need longer flash times but then again when it’s so hot the flash is faster. So it’s a wash. As was already mentioned, once the primer has become dull with no wet spots it’s pretty much flashed off. I give it a little more time then only because insufficient flash time can cause so many problems down the road.

I usually just reduce the primer more with more reducer.
Most times I use as much reducer as activator.
