Smoking at idle is usually a sign that excessive oil is getting past the valve guides for whatever reason. That's good news, compared to a ring problem. If you see smoke on hard acceleration, you have real problems. Stem seals can usually be done fairly easily, though I am not familiar with that engine.

I think crash is right, at idle it would be sucking oil past the valves. A test I did years ago to help isolate it was to press the throttle and watch the tail pipe, if the smoke comes out when pressing the gas pedal its the rings--if the smoke comes out when the engine decelerates its the valve seals. Thats blue smoke, if its black, then its running a rich mixture.

That is definetely not a requirement. lol. But it does go well with the body style.
