A liitle paint rant about my corvette hood.

I have been painting on and off for 25 years, I have done all sorts of cars and used all different products. I just painted my 67 GTO with all SPI products and it has come out great. I have painted cars in booths (when I had my collision shop) and painted out in the driveway or in my garage. All results were great. I have had my share of little problems like we all have. But......

I am painting my 99 Corvette hood now. I just put clear on it. And it looking good so far. But this is the 4th time I am doing this hood in the past 3 years. Every time I have done it something went wrong or it just came out crappy. And I have done it by the book. I have painted 3/4 of the rest of the car and it all came out great, it is just this hood. It seems to be possessed. It has gotten to the point were I am thinking of bringing it some where and have a shop do it. God only knows I have spent a lot of money on it.

We've all had a job like that. The best thing I can say about yours is at least it is your own, imagine the grief you would be getting if it was someone else's!

Perfect example of this hood. I sprayed it yesterday came out nice, a little peel and some dust in the paint.. Watersanding it today. I don't know where it came from, I change my paper and water all the time. A little piece of garbage on the paper and it scratched the paint. Now I am chasing this set of scratches and hoping I don't go thru the clear.
I may just throw this hood out because it is possessed and will never let me do a good job on it.

I took a couple 2gal buckets that nest inside each other and drilled several good sized holes in the bottom of the top bucket. Fill them with soapy water and go at it. The holes let the dirt and grit drop into the bottom bucket keeping your water a lot cleaner.

i have a 1/ 4 inch hose with a bug sprayer tip on it. also have a plastic fuel filter on it. there is plenty of stuff that will float and scratch. my filter gets full of all kinds of stuff. bucket sanding has bit me too many times.

I put filtered water into spray bottles. Even so, dirt can come out of nowhere sometimes.

I use this same technique. I pour my water into the bottles through paint screens. Like shine says its amazing what you find in the filters.
I have to use distilled water for final rinsing since my well water likes to leave white spots if not completely dried with MF towels.

using a bucket to water sand ?

It's 39 degrees here so I really don't want flood out my garage with a hose.

I will use the spray bottle method.

who said flood the garage ? go ahead and use the bucket .

Maybe that was a little much. I usually use a bucket and change the water and paper often. And I never have any problems or else I wouldn't be using the same method for all these years..
But if you read the original post this isn't about wet sanding styles as much as the hood being a pain in the azz.

I think we were all just trying to help, not pick on you. Part of the beauty of this forum is there is something here for us all to learn. The pursuit of excellence is about constantly refining and adjusting techniques. I have no problem at all incorporating the ideas of others into my procedures.

Dirt can come from anywhere, but using a water source that has not been sitting out open (bucket) just helps the odds a little.

I don't think you guys were picking on me at all. I have always used the bucket, but have also used a spray bottle. Sometimes you don't think of everything when you are doing a job. And thats why I come here to remind me off other ways to do things.

By the way the scratches sanded out. And the hood is buffing out great. Universal clear is the best. I still have to remember the hhod is possesed and will probably fall over tonight and get chipped or something.

reminds me of my wifes hotrod, bet I painted one quater 4 times. something always happened. one time didnt even match and out of the original gallon. stay at it, if mine worked out I'm sure yours will. nobody's bad luck last forever imo.
