Acrylic Lacquer Base Coat

I bought some rattle cans of paint that are factory matched to my car, (not Duplicolor) turns out the paint is acrylic lacquer. I also ordered a gallon of the production clear to spray over the repair areas of my car. Will this stuff adhere to the the lacquer basecoat? I read the PDS sheet and it does say it can be applied over "any" basecoat. Thanks!

Adhesion won't be an issue, but I would spray the first coat of clear drier then normal so that you don't have a problem with it lifting (wrinkling) the lacquer edge. You will end up with some orange peel doing that, but too wet on the first clear, and you may be redoing it. doing a test run on some small item would be safer, but I have done that successfully before I got my Standox system, now I can mix just enough base do do a mirror cap with no waste.

IMO it's not a good idea. Using something low grade like rattle can lacquer, then clearing it with urethane, there is a very good chance you will get lifting/wrinkling of the lacquer. I think have heard of it being done in the past but I have no experience with it. Like Renew said above, you would want to do a test panel and see how it reacts. Urethane solvents are "hotter" than what was used in lacquer which leads to the wrinkling. If you use production clear you would not reduce it. Any added reducer just increases the chance of lifting the lacquer. What paint is on the car now? Gotta ask, why are you using those aerosol cans? Get some proper base and blend the repair areas. Unless those repair areas are really small I don't think you will find the result of using those spray cans satisfactory.

If you do go this route, be sure to let the spray can stuff dry as long as possible. IMO 24 hours. Lacquer flashes off fast and feels dry but the solvents in it take a long time to fully leave. In actuality real lacquer never really "dried". But in this case, 24 hours at a decently warm temperature will be acceptable. Giving it time will only help your chances of success.
