Adding metallic or pearl to clear

Sounds like a plan, yes SPI and i have the slowest activator, its really hot here and retarder if needed. I sanded everything today and finished with 500 just waiting for the metallic, Im going to hit a test panel first though don't wanna sand anymore. If it doesnt work out with an even pattern i will just go with pure black and leave it alone... I see alot of cars with metallic colors and solid stripes. he black is basically going on the nose, transom and some of the sides. Do I thin the SPI uv with standard slow urethane reducer? Thanks

dont be afraid to add some metallic to the black, you just get to the limit when it starts turning colors.

Well i chickened out, I put some of the flake on a test panel looked good but the flake .004 was tooo big,and probably wouldnt match the blue very well. This would be would be easy for a small area like a bike tank but for the size area i was doing i was afraid it wouldnt be even so i went with the ss black solid, I will use it on the engine cowling when i get there it will probably look cool on a smaller area . The clear came out good but got the a tiniest bit of ripple orange peel,so im gonna have to sand w/800 an put on some more, i think it was just too hot outside. first coat looked the best then got alittle worse. .

I am going to play with this stuff more after this project is done, i actually ordered some blue pearl and a few other colors to mess around with. The flake in the black is what i had that turned out gold/brownish,but i will throw some in when i get some leftover black and see what it looks like . My V8 jeep is up for paint next so gonna experiment on that. Whats a good electric buffer ,i was looking at a 3m variable speed one on ebay. , next will be the cut buff deal. Thanks dave

It would have looked smaller if you added it with the reducer to the black.
the whole point of this thread was he didnt like the flake added to the black because it looked too brown/gold.

.004 is small but not that small. i am not a big chunky flake kind of guy so i use .004 and .002. .002 is the smallest you will find. below that you get back down into the metallics. there are about 1/2 dozen or so different grades of those. you can add your blue pearl direct to the black. that is a very common thing to do. it wont look brown. it will come out blue as you would expect. something nice to go over the black would be a white xirillic pearl. its a pearl but more coarse and reflective.

here is a thread i started on buffers.

I thought someone else mixed that paint and overloaded it with the gold metallic that turned it brown.

Well I broke down bought the real thing, ppg vibrance crystal silver pearl, this looks really nice in the clear.very small crystals but they reflect about the same size as pearl in the blue . Thanks for the buffer thread.
