Another Galvanized metal question. LOL

S

S1.

Did a search on this and kept seeing where Barry said, "to HAND sand the galvanized metal with 180."
My question is why Hand and not a DA sander? What is the DA going to do to this metal that I need to be aware of?

I'm doing an early 70's horse trailer that is 90% galvanized metal. Of course the whole thing is peeling
but I'll be sanding till retirement if I have to do it all by hand. LOL
I'm not after form on this project merely function.

Thanks.

I would think a DA would be to aggressive and take too much of the galvanized coating off. Hand sanding would not really compromise the galvanize coating.

A second reason is that the galvanize is not good to breathe in. You're gonna kick a lot more dust up with a DA than by hand.

Chris's 2 reasons are all I can think of as to hand sand only. But in your case you need to strip paint off. If most is peeling, you may try a scraper on some of it. Could also try a synthetic stripping disc on a grinder.

Something else to consider here is that the painted side of the metal won't need the galvanizing when using high quality epoxy primer like it did with lesser finishes.

Just wear a decent respirator when sanding.

Something big like that could use plastic media for the paint, then sweep blasting with something harder to give tooth to the galvanized and to remove excess oxidation. Sanding a peeling horse trailer by hand or machine is just something we would never do, just too time consuming.

Just to clarify I didn't mean to imply sand it by hand only why sanding galavanized by hand was better than machine:)

Yeah, I got it. Just wanted to try and give S1 a little perspective. I guess it boils down to the value of one's time.
