Anti static gun

Nyone use an anti static guns before you paint?
If so, what do you use and how much did it cost you?

the minute you tack or blow air onto the surface the static returns. bought on of those high dollar ion bars in the 70's. useless after one pass of the gun .

Gun is useless, been out for years.

Spend $60 on a good grounding system and you have it.
8 FT copper rod in ground, heaviest coated wire Home depot has.
Run into garage and caulk hole.
Hook end of wire or grounding strap or jumper cable and good to go.

Nice idea. Just so happens i can use the hole for the wire where the gas line used to be

I drove a ground rod into the floor of my paint booth. Would run 1/0 wire to the car and a small wire to the gun. Experimented with different stuff but at the end of the day the same amount of dust was in the clear. It's hard to do on just a shell or parts so I quit playing with it.

I remember my grandfather talking about throwing a chain around the bumper to the floor back in his bodyshop days.

Would it make sense to also connect a ground to the metal air piping??

i have done all that with the grounding. in the winter time we have a big issue with static when we are doing alot of loose freehand airbrush work. stuff like realfire, etc. we need to lightly airbrush the design in white over a dark or black base. you can see the overspray gather all over the panel in all sorts off odd patterns. it actually shows the look of the static and while thats cool, its not what i want. lol. i tried grounding the parts with a cable to the 3/4" gal air pipes which in turn are grounded through earth ground at the corner of my building. with the parts grounded there was absolutely no visible difference in the patterns generated or the amount of spray it took to get them to show up.

Winter is the pits, I am buffing every horizontal surface due to static or just crap stirred around by the howling wind...

No not a good ground also cement is a poor ground and don't use the electric service ground.
you can drill hole in cement floor and have grounding rod there but not as good as outside as you want wet soil.

Yes what i meant was will it be good to ground the metal air piping to a grounding rod also?

Sounds like a great idea to me. (air flow causes static)

Cool. Is there a trick to getting these rods into the ground without destroying them?

I just use a hand held 5 lb sledge hammer. They make electric hammer guns and they also sell baby post sliders, Name???
They will mushroom but don''t matter.

i have the hammer drill from hell. will eat through 4 in of concrete fast and drive 8 ft of rod like going through butter .

I have an old hilti hammer drill. That thing will slice through ground easily
