Carbon filters source

I

inspectorbob

I am using the 20" box fans to exhaust on a home-made paint booth in the garage. I have the fiberglass paint arrestors ahead of the fans and want to add the carbon filters to try to cut down on the odors and keep the neighbors happy.

Does anyone know of a good source for these? Everything I have seen online appear to be the furnace type. There are some on Ebay, but they are only 1/4" thick, and I don't see how that would be thick enough. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Guess we all hate out neighbors. LOL

I know nothing about the carbon filters but there is a filter made for this called styro-baffle made by Air Filtration and they are cheap.

Just a question for those in the industry:

Do spray booth exhaust sytems ever use an afterburner to control vapor discharge?

I worked in the aluminum rolling industry and the paint room for coating canstock was all exhausted thru an afterburner.

Do a search for carbon filters and the word "Grow" for some innovative DIY answers.
Different 'industry'.... same reasons regarding the neighbors....

You'd have to know just how much solvent was in the air to avoid the lower explosive limit.

You always want to stay under the lel, that is why box fans and light swtiches dont blow us home hacks up! Either stay below the lel or above the uel and no boom.

The industrial afterburner was nat gas fired and its firebox ran about 1000f.

all the fume exhaust from the paint room and drying ovens was vented through it.
No smells from the paint process to bother the neighbors at the shopping mall. Not something us guys at the waste water treatment plant a few hundred yards further away were ever able to say, LOL.

i use a hydroponics exhaust system with fiberglass paint filters over the carbon filter. fan mounted outside. change filters and shop vac carbon. i dont spray anything larger than a harley tank at one time...

We used water and paper type filters in the ventilation system back in the 80s. Is that same as hydroponics?

Ok, If you don't want to spring for a proper fan, how do you know you know you are OK with the a box fan? I ask because I have a real booth available to actually paint the car, but I do need to spray primer while I do the body work. I don't want to spend a lot on a fan set up if I can get away with a box fan or two.

LOL It may well have qualified as appropriate media back in the Eighties...

I built a booth in my garage out of pvc pipe, duct tape, and plastic sheeting, which is about 10' square (I am painting in sections). I'm using 4 box fans on the exhaust side. Each fan has 4-2" thick fiberglass filters, 1 corrugated paper furnace filter, and 1 carbon filter before the fan. With all the filters, it cuts down on the airflow, so that's why I use four fans. It produces just enough airflow to purge the booth pretty quickly, without causing a substantial draft. I have a tilt-up garage door, so in addition to enclosing the booth, I also have sheeting enclosing the sides and top from the booth to the door. That way, nothing gets blown back in the garage. When it comes time to replace filters, I just remove the first fiberglass one (which catches the bulk of the overspray), and put a new before the paper filter. Now the second filter becomes the first filter. So far, it has really cut down on the smell and haven't seen any angry looks from the neighbors, so I think it is working. Now, if I could just learn how to paint....

Who said anything about qualifications in my post....Is it the same as hydroponics doc? LOL!!

What do I know? I'm not into hydroponics... and was merely theorizing about appropriate (hydroponic) media back in the 80's. You know like water and and paper filters man... I'm sure your zig zag filters worked (qualified?) just fine and I don't doubt your words in the least. ANYTHING to keep those fumes down!
