Cortez Silver

I'm working on a restomod of a 1968 el Camino. Have posted several updates on that.

For 2 years I've had a vision of painting it black with white SS stripes, have not wavered on that, until now.

I was just at Hot August Nights in Reno and saw several black Chevelle's and el Caminos, cool but not as much as I thought. Something about them . . .

Then I came across these pictures:

1970 Chevelle, Cortez Silver with Black SS Stripes

Wow! Classy and sharp! I'm thinking of going this way.

I've seen lots of posts on Facebook forums etc. asking "what color should I paint my car?" And that is a "stupid" question and gets the snarky answers it deserves. Only the owner can decide. It's my car, I get it, I have to love it even if no one else does.

But here is the legitimate question: Has anyone here shot "Cortez Silver?" It is a factory GM paint color.
Here is the paint reference information: https://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorc...olet&syear=1969&smanuf=GM&sname=Cortez Silver

If you have shot this color, was it a PITA? Seems like it is metallic and that brings complications for a novice painter.

And that paint reference link is baffling o me. If I just wanted to order this paint, how would I do it? Best source?

Thanks! Still trying to decide and figure this out.

You would need to go to your paint jobber and bring the GM code which is the WA number. WA3927. As for which jobber you would have to call around. PPG, Axalta (Dupont), and BASF/RM would be the ones to start with. You might also want to contact Chad S, (member here) at http://www.autorodtechnologies.com/chads-paint-and-audio and see if he can mix it in Motobase. Chad knows what he is doig and if he can do it in Motobase that would be a good alternative.

As for shooting it, it's nothing special. Just another silver. It requires a good base gun that atomizes well and proper technique. If you decided to go with it many of us here could walk you through it. Shooting a metallic base is not as hard as you think.

Thanks Chris! Limited jobbers in my area, so I'll reach out to Chad. And if I go this way, I'll definitely reach out for some pointers.

I use to have a 69 Nova the same color and being young and dumb had a few wrecks so had to repair this and refinish. Like chris said just another sliver if remember its a fine sliver metallic.

I have sprayed it twice, easy to do and the same to spray as the 735 silver of Mercedes or the original for yeats silver of VW.
I used my lph 400 1.4 with a purple cap, laid three wet coats, and no fogging was needed.
Used Deltron, but just use a good grade

I personally like a black and silver combination.
To me it presents a simple clean appearance kind of a "less is more".
Good thing I like it, I put 1.2M on this truck, lol.

I always look forward to your updates.
