Cutting and buffing universal clear

S

slows10

Hi fellas, What are you guys using for buffing the univ clear? Just painted my S10 dark polo green metallic with a black sealer before basecoat. So it is pretty dark almost black.I cut it with 2000 grit and a block followed by 3000 trizact on a finish sander. I am using meguiars 105 followed by 205. Clear seems hazy. I am thinking I need something in between the 105 and 205. A swirl remover? I do also have access to many other products like 3m,presta etc. The clear laid down nice and have 3 coats on the cab and 4 on the bed, with rushed flash times unfortunately. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any advice. Keith.

LOL, sorry for the stupid question. Guess I didnt really expect an answer to what products seem to work best buffing universal clear. Probably dont matter much anyway.

I don't think you asked a stupid question, and sometimes it takes a day or so to get replies.
Buffing is as much art as science. I prefer 3M, shine likes Chemical Guys, Barry likes Presta to name a few brands that work well. Each takes a bit different technic and once you learn the line you are using you will most likely stay with it, lol. Haze = micro scratches. A glaze will hide them but not remove them. Pad selection is as important as the compound used. My best suggestion is follow the manufacturers recommendations on pad types, rpms, etc.

Were you able to get the clear flat (remove all orange peel) with 2000?
If so and then you followed with 3000 trizact that car should shine nicely with the 105 and even better with the 205.
I normally follow the 205 with a fine polish like Menzerna 85RD or Final Finish to remove any remaining imperfections but as stated there are many you can choose from.

I have been using Wizards compunds and really like them. I prefer wool to foam for initial cutting.

Technique and good compounds are key, knowing when to stop with each grit is very very important. I can tell you for a fact that if you sand your panels properly out to 3000 grit the buffing time will be quick and effortless. I hand rubbed two fenders to perfection in 45 minutes yesterday with 3M compound-(4 day old UV clear), I could have used the buffer and would have been done in 10 minutes but I was doing some minor paint work in the shop at the same time and didn't want any wool or compound in the air.
