Decals on fresh clear

G

gregstith

I just painted a hood on an '06 Jeep using EuroClear. I know not to wax it for 90 days to let the solvents gas, but will placing a decal on the clear prevent that area from gassing as well. The hood gets a large eagle on it.

Thanks

How many coats of clear?
How many coats of base?
Have you set it outside to gas?
Did you cut and buff it??

The hardest of all questions to answer.

With the facts you posted for bondo, you could apply now.
HOWEVER, I have always asked painters to give the car a week of driving to be safe and personally, I would love a month before applying.

With all that said, I will tell you a lot of shops apply the decal the next day and rarely have an issue.

So now the call is yours!

I have done them the next day before, sometimes hit the panel first with infrared to try and chase out the solvents. But vinyl seems to breathe just enough, even to the point where tiny air bubbles under the decal will slowly disappear. I've never had a redo related to vinyl decals.

You know, I think the only issue I have ever heard of has been about 10-12 years ago, pretty safe bet.

well the only issue is with the decals really. i have seen instances where the clear gasses off and makes bubbles under the decal. these sometimes go away depending on the vinyl. another thing really is if the clear is soft the decal will leave almost like tape marks in the clear if you want to remove them down the road. you will have less of an issue with this on euro clear because its harder. i would wait atleast 3 days to be safe but longer is always better.

I also think 3 days is close to optimal. I didn't mean to sound like someone should put them on the next day.

im going to be clearing with universal, and then putting on some rather large vinyl hood stripes. Waiting isn't a problem, I would be shocked if I did it sooner than a week. My question is, should I put the vinyl over denibbed clear, or do a full cut and buff, and get the parts under the decal as smooth as possible? I gut tells me they would work and look better over a perfectly smooth surface

Yes, do all the buffing that is desired beforehand, but you'll have to carefully remove any remnants of glaze or residue of any kind before applying the vinyl. I think waterborne wax & grease remover works well for this. Use a microfiber towel or the like to avoid scratching.
