Epoxy primed metal stored outside?

B

Benny

Hi everyone,

I currently have two projects fighting for my (limited) garage space. I'm have one stripped to bare metal, and have just shot two coats of SPI epaxy primer over it.

My question is whether it would be ok to leave it outside for 1 or 2 months with a car cover over it? I live in San Diego so we are having warm, dry days with zero rain. However, we are still having some cool, damp nights, and gloomy mornings.

So what do you all think? Would some potential condensation be detrimental for the epoxy primer? Could it percolate through to the steel, and cause corrosion?

Thanks very much.

epoxy is a solvent and water barrier. are all sides of project coated?

Thanks guys...that makes my life a lot easier.

Yes, the car is fully coated.

thats what epoxy is for. also if you let it get a little direct sun, that is my adhesion test. if nothing bubbles/lifts im, good! i do that with all my coats from epoxy to clear... nothing checks /tests your adhesion like a couple days of sun!

I took an evening bodyshop class at a local highschool, and the teacher used to talk a lot about UV and moisture exposure, even on epoxy primer.

He told me a couple of months outside in the summer would be ok, but a couple of months in the winter (even in SoCal) would really be pushing your luck. I'm learning to double-check most of the things he told me.....

SPI epoxy has been recommended by SPI as a permanent topcoat for undercarriages and suspension parts, so its moisture resistant qualities should not be doubted. Also, the black epoxy now gets a UV absorbing additive, so it is OK for sun exposure, though I believe urethane is still a better choice for topcoats on top surfaces. Any of the SPI epoxies can withstand a certain amount of sun exposure, though once so exposed they should be well sanded and recoated with a fresh layer of epoxy prior to top coating, or any other repair activity for that matter.

Kinda reminds me of the old saying, "those who can do, those who can't teach"
