Epoxy Surface Texture

I sprayed this fairing with SPI grey epoxy using a 1.4 tip HVLP cheepo gun at 38PSI trigger pulled. I had the fluid open about 1 turn. This gun seems to really lay it on if opened much and a 1 sec pull of the trigger leads to a WET oval shape.

The surface of the fairing was sanded with 220 and adhesion promoter.

Epoxy mix and induction as per tech specs.

I have received some replies from autobody101 forum saying that I will need to sand it back with 400. I'm leaning toward the gun being the culprit, since its el-cheepo and tough to dial in. Fancy gun is on the way but will take couple weeks to get. I needed to spray this to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather we are having around here.

Being a newb I just wanted some ideas about surface finish that a primer should have which would be conducive to lay BC over. I'm guessing just like an eggshell surface/ the 1200 grit paper look? (or is the standard to always sand and then lay the BC?)

eggshell surface-store bought eggs or free range? a little reducer helps a lot if you're trying to spray it as smooth as a sealer.

Obviously thats too rough of an egg shell to spray color on... Can't even say I heard of egg shells as a reference for surface condition, but whatever..

Hard to tell in the photos just how bad the texture is. Sometimes bad texture is bad application, and should come back off especially if its dry.

I'd sand it with 220 then 320 then depending on the color 600. If you have to, try again.. As Bob said, a little reducer helps alot, even as a primer. With time you develop a feel for how the material drips from the mixing stick compared to what you want to do.
