fire hazzards

after steves fire i thought i would ask . how many of you kill your main breaker when you leave the shop ? after my fire i am super paranoid of fires. even though mine was caused by welding i just dont want to take any chances. i even throw solvent rags on the floor to dry out before throwing them in the trash. i remove battery cables and even drain fuel from cars in the shop. just something to think about.

GREAT idea, Shine.

I have all ground faults on every plug-in in my garage, not sure that helps but it made sense in my feeble mind at the time.

I leave electric heat on all winter at 70 degrees.

Also leave a battery tender on what ever car is in the garage.

Scares me to death.

I am one that needs to pay more attention to such things. Guilty of getting tired and just leaving everything lay where its at. I do keep all my paints and solvents in a metal cabinet but the rags sitting in the barrel overnight made me think.

Rags that have a flammable substance on them should be stored in a metal can with a metal lid on it. Without O2, they wont burn, at the most smolder. Tossing them outside is great if the ground is not flammable.
One thing I never thought of until talking to a fire investigator is cordless battery chargers. he stated that there have been many instances of them overheating and starting fires.
One garage fire was enough for me. . .

when cleaning a car i throw the paper towel on the floor by the can. after it dries i toss it. one of my friends always thought i was a bad shot and missed the can . most of my paper stuff goes to the burn pile .
but when i go to town i do a walk around and then hit the main breaker on the way out.

I do the same as shine, all solvent rags get tossed on the ground until dry. I think this should be a reminder to everyone to pay a little extra attention.

You can still have an electical fire even if you throw the main breaker . It does reduce the risk if you do throw it.

i dont think i've ever heard of a fire starting in the main line. not sure what it would burn.

I don't worry about killing the main to my shop, I dont see it being any different than not killing the main to my house every night when I go to sleep.

I think things like rags and sparks and heaters and multiple extension cords plugged into multiple adapters are the most likely culprits.

It burnt the conduit from meter to the breaker panel, the side of the house, the wood above the breaker box. Smoke damage through out the entire house. Odd thing was it put itself out.
