frame paint

Hi guys, new project, 71 Cutlass Convertible. Some metal work ahead of me, but not a frame-off project. The frame has surface rust, any recommendations on what paint to use on it? I'm thinking an 80 grit d/a sanding, some spi cleaner and brush/spray on a few coats of spi black epoxy..I know that is should be abrasive blasted to be done rigth, but..what's the best product in a situation like this?..probably really isn't one, right? I've heard all the miracle paint and por-15 BS, so not sure what to use to clean up the frame with body on.. I know nothing will probably work long term, because of improper preparation.

Here is what I do on tractor castings where blasting isnt an option because I am not willing to risk ruining the whole machine becasue of getting sand in a seal.

Grind off Heavy Scale

Wire wheel

DA with 80 and Mini grinder for tight spots

Barry's 710 and 700

2 coats of epoxy.

There will still be some rust in the pits, but I have had good luck doing tractors this way. I have not seen any rust come through or any peeling yet. I use the tractors on our farm, and some have been done some time ago.

Thanks Strum, I'm guessing the por 15 and miracle paint are a joke? I usually do things "the right way" so I don't know if the short cut products work or are just a joke.

IMO, POR 15 offers absolutely no benifits over SPI epoxy. From what I have seen, epoxy just sticks better....I've had the POR peel right off of wire brushed areas that didn't get enough scratches from sand paper. I doubt Barry recommends using it this way, but there are just too many places to get sand in a tractor.

Have you checked locally with any blasting companies. If you can find a good one that is reasonalble, they could prbably do it for less $$ than you will have in time of doing it any other way. I found a place here that I take a lot of stuff too. At their rates, it is not even worth my time of dragging out the blaster and all the sand mess.

I was just quoted $350 to blast and powder coat my frame by a shop in Chicago. Thinking I'm gonna make the 300 mile trip to get it done

$200-$250 for a fullsize truck or car frame near me, steel shot blast and powdercoated. http://peninsulapowdercoating.com/
These guys do good work, I seen a frame they did for a George Poteet build. I've also had them do suspension parts, tunnel rams, rear end housings...

Nice!they are even closer!

I think it's more of a steel slag than shot. They use two different sizes of media at Peninsula, some is coarse and some looks like the same profile I get with 80 grit sized silica, I think it depends on what they are blasting. They blast sheetmetal for traditional paint prep as well and I have no complaints, glad they are available.
