Hologram effect

Hey Guys, I painted my jams last night. Everything went well with the epoxy primer, sprayed that on Sat eve. Last night I shot my Paint it was a nice even coat of deep rich black. but then as it was drying I could see a kinda blocthyness (if thats even a word) to it. almost as if i painted it with two different kinds of paint. part of it had a semi gloss while the other was more flat. I thought it was just the way it was drying. But this morning its still there but the funny thing is on a few of the small pieces, I can pick them up and move them around in the light and it almost has a hologram effect. thats the best way i can describe it. I wish i could photgraph it it but it wont show in a photo. any ideas what this could be. Probably the paint. I used Omni MBC with there medium reducer and about a oz. of SPI activator. did it im my garage and it was about 70 degrees. I had the heat on and off. any help would be great-full thanks

For some reason black dries weird. PPG and dupont both had some semi gloss streaky effect. Once cleared it was all good!

That blotchiness is different rates of solvent absorption, shoot your clear and it will go away.

on my glove box door I sprayed it with waterborne wax and grease remover to simulate clear, and I could still see it. is this not a good test? or is there a chemical reaction when using the clear. its been 24 hours now that I have sprayed the base. Is it to late to try the clear?

I went head and cleared the few small parts i had and you guys were right it went away. even though it had just been 24 hrs since i shot the base I went ahead and cleared everything anyhow. I had just got done with my first coat. and man did i get sick to my stomach. so much so that I couldn't start the second coat or even pull the tape off the first. as the evening went on im getting sicker and sicker puked about 10 times till there is nothing left. felt a few times like i was going to pass out. its been a long time since i have been this sick if ever. I writing this now just to take my mind off it. do you think the isocyanates had something to do with this. I had a brand new mask on, both of my garge doors open. and i was probably only in it for about 10mins. Iv heard confilting storys about the 3m mask that they will filter the isocyanate as long as it is new, and others say it wont. what will be the best way to remove the tape tomorrow. if i make it that is. thanks again

Where did you buy the mask from? Could you smell the paint while you were spraying? Did you install all of the filters in the mask when assembling it?

Put the mask back on and put your hands up against there filters, breathe in and the mask should suck to your face and you should not be able to suck in any air.

I got the mask from TPC Global when i ordered some SEM interior paint last week. it was still in the 3M zip-lock bag thing and I put the carbon filters on. I even had some extra pre filters from my last job, and change them out just before the clear. I Did not smell any paint at all. Used my hand to check the seal. I'm pretty confident I had it on correctly. It might have been something I ate to, but it just came out of nowhere and hard

Sounds like food poisoning if it came on that hard and emptied you out that fast, go get some medical advice maybe.

Im thinking food poisoning as well. I went out and looked at it this morning .Man it sure looks good. that was the first time I felt like i had control of the clear instead of it controlling me. Granted I havent painted very much but each time I getting more confident. Just wish I would have got the second coat on. Is it important to have at least 2 coats?. When Is it too late to shoot a second coat of clear?. The door jams, lower dash, and inside doors is what i shot. they have far more gloss now then they ever did from the factory. Do you guys think one coat is enough? Its not a show truck but, im building it for my wife and want her to be proud of it.

I'm a doctor, but I mainly specialize in breast exams.

If its all interior items like u said. tack it off and spray two more coats. it will be fine and will bite in to the fresh clear already laid down.
Hope your on the mend. I dont think your sickness was caused from the paint either ;-)

Did you use cartridges that are NIOSH TC-23/84A rated? That is the cartridge rated for isocynates. It is approved for use but there is a time table to determine its life. In the conditions you describe I would feel safe using a pair of cartridges for 2 hrs exposure. then toss then and put on new ones.

Unless you have been sensitized to isocyanates I don't think you had a reaction even if you absorbed some through your eyes.

Typical reactions to isocyanates according to the CDC:
Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can also sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again. Death from severe asthma in some sensitized subjects has been reported. Workers potentially exposed to isocyanates who experience persistent or recurring eye irritation, nasal congestion, dry or sore throat, cold-like symptoms, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest tightness should see a physician knowledgeable in work-related health problems.

I have shot isocyanate paints for many years using the TC23 cartridge. Proper fitment of the respirator is critical. It sounds to me like you did it all correctly.

I think you most likely ate something that didn't agree with your internals and is a coincidence is my best guess.

Get feeling better and get back to work on your project.

btw, 3M recommends a supplied air respirator for isocyanates, but they do produce TC23/84A rated cartidges, so that is probably the reason for confusion on that issue.

Certain parts of the interior experiance a lot of wear, give it 2 more coats so it doesnt wear off .

WHEW! I was sounding like you were discusted with your paint job. Good to hear it was only you being sick for real. ;)

I'd take that over a paint job going bad anyday. Seriously, hope your feeling better.
