How should I do candy apple red

Let me put this out there, I'm not that great at painting yet. Now that is out in the open I want my bike frame painted candy apple red. Ok so what are my options, do it myself, find somebody that will do it with spi primers and clears... sounds expensive, or get it powder coated for $350-450? Anyways if I do it myself how do you cut and buff it to get it to shine or do you. I don't have a clue here. Be easy on me.

no cutting and buffing on a frame. even if you wanted to its really not necessary. if you want it powdered or paint then thats for you to decide. frames are difficult to spray with any kind of paint. while candy on a frame is difficult in some ways its also forgiving in other ways. its difficult to get even color around tube joints, brackets and all the ins and outs. on the other hand mistakes are less noticeable on a frame then they would be on say a hood or door.

I contacted HOK before I posted this question and they responded back saying to use there KD3000 epoxy primer and KBC11(kandy apple red) single stage, I believe a none urethane and then clear with USC01, a urethane clear. Then said it would be risky spraying their products with other as there solvent are considerably stronger. I have a friend that swears by single stages with a urethane clear, he is a better painter than I but I've also read and have been told that single stage paints aren't as deep in color.

Well kbc is not a single stage. Its basecoat. You wont get complete coverage with it so you should put down a solid red under it as well. Their solvents are not stronger by any means. I have used spi reducers in hok base for 11 years now. They work great together. You have to watch hok and what they say. I have been using their stuff for many years but when to talk to anyone from the company i can tell you the line of $hit that comes out of their mouths is unbelievable. i should also say that if your looking for a candy red frame i suggest you take a look at an actual chip of the kbc before hand. i never liked the kbs cline because they just dont look like candys. if your want the look of a true candy job you would be far better off going to your local jobber or supplier and getting some light metallic red base mixed and order some apple red in the kk line. they are the concentrated dyes. mix that into some clear base binder like spi's intercoat (dont use hok's) that just shoot a couple coats over the red base and clear it. if you buddy like ss then you can add the dye to clearcoat as well. by the time you buy all the stuff to do this you probably could have just had it powder coated or had someone do the job for you lol.

Will you really see the candy effect on the frame?

$450 for powder is on the high side unless there are a lot of separate parts. Powder is more durable than paint, I feel urethane is better on a frame than b/c.

hok kd3000 is a good product and can be had in almost any color you need,

I would go with a red metalic pc on the frame for a rider and paint for a show bike.
