How thick is too thick for 2k primer

Yesterday I open a gallon of recently purchased #6530 Standard 2k black primer, and it seemed really thick. Not like I remember it being a couple years back when I went through about 4 gallons. Just trying to stir it, I broke 4 wooden stirrers, and spraying it, I had to stop twice because the gun clogged

I can stick a stirrer in the middle, and it will just stay there without moving. Is that normal? One can in the shipment was damaged during shipping, but nothing leaked, so I assume it was fine

is ALL the primer thick or just separated out to the bottom? if its ALL think any chance you stuck a stir stick back in the can after it touched the activated primer?

In that photo above, the primer has been thoroughly stirred, and that was a new, clean stir stick (I always use a clean stick each time). I have another gallon of the same primer. I just haven't opened it yet, as I wanted to use that dented up can first, but I'll check the other gallon tomorrow. It seems to be about the consistency of chocolate syrup, maybe a little thicker. Not quite as thick as hot tar, but that is actually what it reminded me of when I first started stirring it

The stick should stand up, that is normal.
Primer is thick but should thin down with good mixing of activator.(this is key and 99% of all my 2K problem calls)

Only thing it could be is mixing of activator or if that damaged can let solvents leak out??
Why not call Monday and let us send you a good can and see if the issue is resolved.

That right there is one of the many reasons I will buy and use SPI as long as I am painting. Barry and his folks care about their customers, not just selling product. I can't imagine what happened to that can in shipping to cause that, considering I received 4 boxes of products the other day and now have a 30 gallon trash bag filled with packing peanuts lol. Thanks again Barry and everyone else at SPI for going above and beyond.

Thank you for that offer Barry, but I really don't think the fault is with the primer, it's with the end user :) That right there is one of the reasons I use and tell everyone about SPI. Nowhere else would you ever get that type of customer service. :encouragement:

I opened the other gallon and it is identical, so I guess maybe my Alzheimer's is kicking in and I just didn't recall how thick this it actually was the last time I used it lol. Last time it was gray though, but not that it should make a difference. I still am having trouble spraying the 2K though (The epoxy went on great!!) Maybe it is in my mixing like you said. Nothing leaked out of the can. The box was completely undamaged and the packing material was fine also. What brand guns and tips are you guys using to spray the 2K? I have a good gun I use for base and clear, but tired two different cheaper guns for the primers

I will do what ever it takes but 2k primer when thick don't mate real easy with the activator and takes some additional stirring to make it even.
If not stirred long enough two things happen, pot life can go south fast and second, it does not spray well.

On the gun suggestion, I use a Vapor 2.3 for 2K and even for epoxy when I am going for build. Northern tool has them for around $50-60 I think.
