I must be doing something wrong?

I placed my order for SPI epoxy. It came, and when I read the instructions I realized I forgot the water based W&G remover.

I stopped at the local place and got a gallon of Transtar.

First I blew off the sanding dust with an air gun. Spent what i thought was a lot of time to do a thorough job. Then I started with the Transtar. I followed the instructions, put it on with a soaked wipe, dried with a separate wipe. Every time, the wipe would come up dirty. I was at it for what seemed like hours, but was probably only 30 minutes to an hour, this was to clean the inside of a not yet installed 1/4 panel (about 30 minutes to an hour on each).

I think I used a whole roll of the blue paper towels on each panel before the wipes were coming up mostly clean.

Is this typical, or should it have gone quicker? Is it the Transtar? I still have a lot left but would order up a gallon of the SPI for next weekend if it would take some time out if this step? Should I have used some solvent based first? Would spraying it on worked better than the soaked rag?

Some sanding grit just doesn't blow off. I usually take a clean rag/paper towel and wipe everything while I am blowing it off. That helps a lot. Although SPI is great stuff, the Transtar isn't a problem. As long as stuff is coming off, it's doing it's job. If it leaft stuff on there, I would worry.

just curious, is the sstuff coming off dirt or is it the coating on the panel?

Those NOS panels have been sitting around for a long time, did you clean them before sanding?

Yes, they had been washed with soap and water a few times, last time a few weeks prior to sanding.

I think I''ll try the wiping while blowing with air next time. Plus it occurred to be later if I had a sprayer, I could have stood the panel upright and used a sprayer to was the dirt down and off. I had the panel laying flat and just used a soaked rag.

you could also try spraying the cleaner on the panel and let it sit for about a minute to let the cleaner loosen up any dirt and bring it to the surface then wipe clean

If it never seems to stop, you might have a soluble coating on the part. Check it with a towel and some reducer, if reducer wipes it off you should remove the coating.
