I want to turn my 1.4 tip HF purple gun into a 1.8 or 2.0 primer gun

any hackers have any idea's? Tired of spaying slow thru a 1.4 tip

If it's not worth anything you could try drilling the fluid tip out. I've done this successfully on junker primer guns years ago. Go up with the drill bit sizes in increments and keep it straight drilling from the inside out. Once drilled re-seat the needle with some fine valve lapping compound or buffing compound so it won't leak. It works, may not spray the best but chances are it'll get the job done. If you've got access to a lathe it makes it easier to get it drilled straight. Shine has the best advice though!

I don't use the purple HF gun anymore although it's done me very well in the past. I hate to chuck it, I upgraded the HF Purple gun to a nice large capacity Iwata metal cup and just thought "why not try to drill it out ? " Nothing to lose. I don't "slick sand" prime too much. But trying to spray Slick Sand thru my 1.4 Iwata LPH 400 is just aggravating. Took three hours to do just one side of the car. Thanks for the tip. I wasn't sure if I should drill the cap or the fluid tip as you state. I may give it a try.

Frankly, I didn't know prime guns went as big a 2.3 tip , that's huge

So I tried it. Works pretty good. I removed the HF purple fluid cap with a wrench, placed it in a vise, used a hand drill with a 1/16" bit and doubled the opening, then lapped the needle. Made sure no leaks. Then filled the cup with unreduced Slick Sand. It actually flowed nice, with less texture, still not fast spraying , but better. I may try to drill it out again to 1/8" see what happens.

Yeah 1/8" would let the needle out. I just opened up to 5/64"

I'm glad it worked. I had my doubts about it when you was thinking about doing it. I figured it would not seal right. I understand you wanting to keep it. I also enjoyed the vid. Looks like a great project car.

I can see going thru this, but the 1.8 guns at harbor freight are usually on sale for 9.99. I got one just to spray HOK adhesion promotor to plastic.
