Isos - a cautionary tale.

Last weekend I was getting ready to spray my truck tailgate with an activated base. It's CA so very hot, I was in shorts, no gloves since it was a "small job". I always wear a supplied air breathing setup and was this time too. Anyway, I loaded the gun and decided to give it one large shake in order to make sure no metallics had settled. Well, the lid wasn't on right and I covered myself and half my garage in base. Tore off the supplied air hood and knowing it was iso based paint decided to wipe myself down with acetone. The acetone wasn't too effective so went to lacquer thinner.
Well, this is fun - got a lot of it off my skin then set to work cleaning up the garage as quickly as I could - used the best part of a gallon of thinner all the time breathing in this shit.
Took me half an hour to clean up. Mixed more paint, put the hood back on and did the job.

So, that evening I was watching the basketball on TV, and started to get gut cramps. Went off to the bathroom and felt so damn cold that I had to crawl into bed fully clothed. After a few minutes I managed to drag a fan heater into the bed with me and warmed myself up for probably an hour. Felt like shit, that night I could not sleep - had the hot sweats all night. At 5am I "exploded" in the bathroom. Exploded 2 more times by 11am. Worst diarrhea I have ever had. Next day I could not go to work I felt so shitty. Next night I "exploded" one more time, went to bed and woke up at 4-ish absolutely drenched in sweat. Over the course of the next 24hours I began to feel better. At this point a week or so later I am feeling OK except tired from an accumulation of lack of sleep.

Morals of the story -

1) no job is"too small" to protect yourself.
2) If you have an accident and spill iso based paint leave your damn supplied air system or respirator ON as you clean up.

Sorry that happened to you. One of the reason why I always wear a spray suit. One thing I do on a daily basis is take a megadose of Vitamin E. Supposed to stop the "free radicals" in your body. I will say this about ISO's though, the concern is over LONG term accumulation. Spilling some on you in some activated base is not going to do any long term damage. Day in Day out accumulation, year after year is where the damage would come from. Unless you have a super sensitivity to Iso's which in that case you should probably not be painting or handling the stuff.
