Ive been reading.. best media for Red Oxide prime removal?

I have some NOS 1/4s on my 65 Mustang Fastback. I thought I could easily DA off the red oxide primer. I guess that old lead based stuff sticks pretty good! I did get it off on the large expanses of the convex panel on the one side, but on the top and in the sail area, I can't really get in there. Also in the nooks and crannies around the taillight extensions etc, it is impossible. I think I should break out the pressure blaster, but don't want to warp anything. The big conves areas took long enough that I'll probably want to blast the whole other side as well.

Is it safe to use the aluminum oxide I have in there at 40 psi? Or should I order some plastic media or walnut shells?

As well as this stuff seems stuck, I guess it still has to come off before i epoxy?

Thought appreciated...

Media blasting is a good solution for hard to reach areas. Warping is not too much a concern until you get out onto the flatter areas of the metal, inside the window opening, etc. it will not cause trouble.

The aluminum oxide will work OK if it is in the 80 grit range, it's a bit aggressive and pricey, but if it's what you have it will be OK, otherwise crushed glass is best, imo.

Those NOS quarters were a nice find! SPI's red oxide is even more durable! That looks like a nice project going well, weld the quarter seams completely regardless if you're using filler or solder.

The quarter louvers are also a PITA to strip as they have a fair amount of detail in the castings which easily deforms when sanding etc.. the last pair I did I used chemical stripper then washed them well and lightly blasted to ready them for epoxy.

Thanks! Yes, they were a great find. Back before the "one piece repros" were available.

I definitely don't want to mess them up! I think I'll DA the other side to match, and use my aluminum oxide on the tough spots. I looked for plastic media online, but really didn't find any recommended for what i want to do. I'm probably looking in the wrong places though. Should I consider Walnut shells?

I am a novice in terms of blasting. I recently used medium grit (4070) crushed glass from new age blast media. A 50lb bag was $6.50. I shot it at 45-50 psi and even though it was i first time i didn't manage to warp any panels. It cut well and removed several layers of paint and primer from my 78 F150 fenders and doors. I did use way too much media and I have since learned that i should probably be operating at about 35-40 psi with the media supply valve much less open. Figured I'd add my novice experience for any other beginners reading this thread.....
