I'm looking for a new base coat gun and really can't make up my mind. I'm looking at a Iwata supernova with the gold cap or the Sata 4000 hvlp. I have heard really good things about both of these guns but i'm still not sure which way to go. I currently use a DeVilbiss GTi Millennium that I have been using the last few years and i have had pretty good luck with it; however, it is getting old. I use a supernova now for my clear and think it's great but I don't have anything to compare it to. I have never sprayed a Sata so I don't know anything about the guns. From what I can see it's kind of the the great Ford vs Chevy debate. I'm getting ready to spray a customers 1964 Biscayne and would like to get something before I spray it. What are your guys opinions on these guns? Has anyone sprayed with both? Also what size tip do you recommend spraying base with? I'm a small shop that does high end restorations. We do all the body and paint work in house but only do a few jobs a year so I would like to make sure I make the right choice. Thanks for any help.

Ive used my Iwata for a few solid colors sprays pretty nice almost better than my Sata. Haven't tried it on metallics or pearls yet. A painter in our other shop was using it for basecoat and was having trouble. It's personal preference on how you spray my Sata 4000 1.4 I use for clear sprays more similar to the GTi's than my Iwata does. So if you're used to the gti and like it I would lean closer to a Sata.

Thanks for your reply. I ended up ordering the Supernova. I guess we will see how it is. I really wanted to order the Sata, but the CFM it requires made me hesitant my compressor is 19 CFM i'm not sure if that would of been enough for the SATA. I was also considering the Tenka gun but I figured having a base and clear gun that feel the same in the hand might be beneficial. The first car i'm spraying is a solid color so I won't be able to tell how the metallic control is but I guess time will tell.

I didn't like the styling of the SuperNova and it seemed a little heavier than the conventional Iwatas and Satas.
