Just a caution!

The tech line has a lot of value to me as well as the customer, so just a couple of concerns here.

As of today I have had 3 calls with fish-eye problems, 2 in clear and one with epoxy.
One of the clears we tested and it was the tack rag, the epoxy yesterday we tested and isolated it to the tack rag, today's call, fist question from me is did you tack your base and what tack rag? Chrystal in all three cases. May be an issue here??? I use the Blue professional one and have for years but any could slip up on a batch.

A real high quality shop that does only restorations, for last 30 days we have been fighting fish-eyes in the clear and SS, finally he said could the naked gun cleaner be the problem, so had him put urethane reducer in gun and let set over weekend, shook gun and sprayed , put more in and sprayed., Clear sprayed great for a couple of panels, then bingo did it again.
Told him to throw the stuff away and use his old gun, no problem, so he calls me today as his new Iwata LPH 400 he decided to take apart and clean good so he could use again, low and behold it is totally corroded inside, no doubt from one of the virgin solvents in the mix. (lol) Only an acid can corrode a gun.
He said gun is trash but I gave him something to try and see if we can save.

Don't know what is what as far as above but worth being aware of if you have a problem.

So the final diagnosis was the gun cleaner he was using?
I use the Crystal tack rags and so far haven't had any issues with them.

Couldn't that just as well be user error, like not letting it air out before use, or pressing it in too much? Or am I being too anal?

I have a couple of hours on the phone with each of 2 of the guys as they are both top notch and only do high in work. We had to do a number of tests to isolate.
The third one don't know but said if still a problem call back, with instructions what to do..

Also I had Tye take his box back to the PPG jobber, just in case someone else had complained, so the company can check out.

I just checked and actually have a box of crystal here, used on a number of tests and not had a problem, not sure how old it is but do remember years ago the blue ones had a bad batch, so could happen, like I told Tye, important to let jobber know so he can check with WD, just in case. Could always be a fluke, never know.

I had a gallon of that naked gun stuff, and it ate through the can over the years, however I never put much thought into the fact that if it can eat through a can, what would it do to the gun..

ive been using the naked gun stripper for prob 15 years. the one in the steel pail with the soaking basket. i soak each of my gun usually once a month. never had an issue. give the parts a scrub and rinse down with lacquer thinner when i pull them out. generally i try to put a gun in at the end of the day then pull it out and reassemble the next day. you dont really want to soak a gun and forget its in there for 2 weeks.

crash, yeah i bought some cases of surgical blue rags years ago and i finally ran out. using gerson now. they are about the same as the blue ones only white. havent had a problem with these.

I have never seen the stuff but Jim, sounds like he was using it as you would a lacquer thinner every day??

there are a couple products under the naked gun cleaner name. i think one is like a normal lacquer thinner for regular cleaning then there is the nasty stuff which is basically a water thin pail of paint stripper.

Its a shame, brand new gun and were not sure we can save it, some how an acid got in mix as the only thing that can cause this problem.

Saw this a few years ago on a batch of lacquer thinner, a friend was having private labeled, started corroding aluminum paint gun cups, I told him at the time BS is BS and they were not virgin solvent but recycled and one of the acids went through, he laughed it off and left the painters hanging and then a year to date, same thing happened again and he bought seems to me 45 to 75 cups and went out of business.

Why is it so hard for people to take advice.. I tell things to people all of the time and they laugh at you like you are crazy..

I'm just using fast 860 reducer, can't think of anything better now and you are right the new berrymans is total crap.
