Lighting Strike House warning

Good Morning all,

A few years back we had a bad storm roll through and our house was hit by lighting. What we learned from that is to go around and unplug things like the TV's, stereo etc. Well while we were going around to unplug things all of the sudden we heard a loud bang and there was very bright flash. Yes we were hit once again. As Sue and I were walking around the house checking to see what got damaged/blown she called me out to the garage. We had water coming in through the sills. As I walked around Old Bessie (Packard) I am like what the heck is this on the floor. I picked up the object and go this sure looks like the cap for Bessies battery. I look over the side mount tire and this is what I saw.

Yes the battery blew it's top. So what I gathered what happen here is that I had a Battery tender attached to the battery. This tender is just one of them small 6v ones that is like a little transformer. When the lighting hit it went through the tender and just blew the top right off the battery.

I posted this to let others know if you have a tender attached to your vehicle and a storm starts to roll through your area please detach the tender as you can see what can happen.

Picture of where it came in at. Front door. Same area as last time :(

WOW! I had no idea! I have one in the one garage at all times on the vette and in wife's garage on T-bird and one in basement on tractor. What a mess that would be.

Tom, sorry about you getting hit but thanks for the warnings.

I washed the hood and areas that got sprayed by the acid with water and car wash and then straight water last night. Will paint be ok?

That is painful to look at, so sorry to see that happen to you. I'm afraid you need to get in touch with someone well versed in acid, because battery acid is one of the worst, and the fumes can do you some harm also. I think you are going to have to use a base to neutralize it.

Yes, I agree, but I'm just not sure how much needs to be neutralized, because of the fumes, and the longer you wait the worse it will get. Its like the vented battery corrosion on the terminals, we use to mix baking soda and water and pour it over the terminals, and if I'm not mistaken that corrosion was caused by the fumes coming out of the vents.

If the acid has not left a stain spot usually purple or blue, you have nothing to worry about, with the paint you used, should not be a problem unless soaked for a long time.
Washing it off as soon as possible and you good to go.
