Long term strip/primer

I am planning on stripping and refinishing my car one panel at a time due to the location of the car and time permitting. I will only have a few evenings a week (at most) to work on it, and it will be done outside. My plan is to strip one panel, then mix up a small amount of epoxy primer and spray just the area stripped. I would much prefer the have the body blasted wiht walnut shells then sprayed all at once, but funds don't permit this.

Is there a better way to do this, or is this a really bad idea?

It's a fine idea. Also, if you did use walnut shells, you'd need to sand the metal anyway, since walnut shells won't leave a surface profile on steel, which is required for adhesion.
