Looking for a satin gray / silver paint...

E

edp

Hi all, I want to respray the dash faceplate with a silver / gray color as the original was but its a satin more then a gloss finish. Does anyone make a 2K satin silver or gray like the SEM hot rod black type finish?

Chad, you have anything like that is pro-spray?

Thanks, Evan

PS - I really didn't want to resort to bomb can painting on it either, side note - I did see Mar-Hyde made a satin trim gray in an aerosol can, still skeptical though....

Flattener can be added to any single stage paint. You can also use basecoat and add flatener to the clear.

When adding flattener to your clear coat do you flatten all of the clear or just the flow coat?
Also, is it like single stage where it cannot be color sanded and buffed?

It cannot be sanded and buffed and yes only the final clear session needs flattener. Not the final coat....the final session.

Thanks Jim, I was hoping for the cheater method of only one paint product to shoot - I'm wondering about the amount of build I'll get out of a base & clear. There's a very fine imprinted pattern in the faceplate plastic I dont want to fill in with too much paint build up.

I figured I'd just give the dash a good toothbrush cleaning with dawn & spray w/minimal coats.

68 - when you posted your dash pic's, what'd you use on yours for paint, doesn't that mopar dash have a pattern in it too?

Are you referring to the Coronet:

The green on dash pads is RM Diamont mixed for interior use.
The black is Krylon Plastic Fushion in Black Satin.

Or the Buick:

Hot Rod Flatz

Hey i forgot about that. Thats the way you want to go for interior stuff. Rm diamont with a little catalyst it. Dries matte and only has the build of basecoat. I did the testured stereo surround in my truck that way. Matches perfect and looks great 6 years later.

68 - yes the coronet dash was what I was talking about. Will base be UV rated ? not sure how much it'll matter as the dash isn't in direct sun but definitely will be hit with it. So it was just base & hardener ? How'd you like the hot Rod Flatz - I thought the SEM stuff was amazing although if you spray it too wet it does get shiny. Fast & almost dry spray gets the satin look really well from that stuff.

heres my grill & cowl vents in the SEM....

Here's the instructions I followed on the RM Diamont:

DIAMONT BASECOAT

INTERIOR (no clear or flex agents needed)

Mixing Ratio Instructions 1 part Diamont basecoat
10% hardener (DH42 or DH46)
75% - 100% UR reducer

Without the clear coat I doubt there would be much if any UV protection but only direct sunlight will produce UV damage from what I understand. Light passing through glass or reflecting on to the paint is supposed to be safe. IIRC

Nice job on the repair to the cowl vents and sheen on the paint looks perfect.

The Hot Rod Flatz was my first attempt at this type of finish. The paint seemed to be fine it was the operator learning curve that caused the defects and delays. LOL

I might try the silver satin they offer then, I'd like to know its UV protected & since its a single stage I'd think it'd be stronger then just catalyzed base.

The grill & cowl covers came out well, I also used it on the door cap & post trims since they were all black originally as well - all of it looks great. Pretty happy with the SEM stuff.

light passing through glass doesn't stop UV rays-this is why modern cars have a black border around the edge of the windshield to protect the urethane adhesive from UV exposure.

bob is absolutely right. i have never seen the diamont fade or anything like that when used as interior paint. i'm sure it depends on color though. most interior color tend to be neutral which don't really fade. if you plan on a bright red or orange dash then i might stay away from it or put a flat clear over.

Bob & Jim - wouldn't a base even with hardener be more prone to scratching/chipping then a 2K single stage paint like the Flatz products?

Maybe I'm over thinking the whole thing & I should just shoot same damn paint on it! Of course I still need to buy the silver paint........

Just an info update - after consulting a paint supplier I decided on trying the SEM Bumper Coater.I tested a section on a broken dash I have & it sprayed out nice & didn't in fill all the stamped pattern on the dash face. It drys very thin - was a bit skeptical on the first spray as it looked liker it'd build up quite a bit but didn't. It also has a nice matte/satin finish when dry. I was looking at the SEM Color Coater as well - more choices in that line but that looks like a shinier product.

I still cant see anywhere in the product lit or on the can that says its UV rated/protected but assuming its going on a bumper it'd have to be wouldn't it?
