Motobase LV

Thought I would post a couple of pictures of this truck I painted with Motobase in Gunmetal Gray. First time I tried this base that Chad sells and this is one coat shot over gray build primer.

50% over lap, using a Tekna Copper with 1.4 tip and SPI 885 reducer. Laid down nice, covered easily in two coats. I did shoot a drop coat for a third coat.

I think it looks great. Getting ready to spray some prospray base soon with the Tekna. Can you give me some more details on your gun setup. Also if you could explain the drop coat method as well. Do you guys activate the base. Thanks.

With the gun empty turn the fluid know all the way out. Pull trigger full open and hold while turning the fluid knob in until it starts to lift the trigger. Release the trigger and turn the fluid knob in 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
Set PSI at the gun with the trigger pulled to 23. With mixed base in the cup shoot a test pattern on a piece of masking paper taped to the wall. Hold gun 6" from paper and pull trigger full open and hold for 1 second then release. Check your pattern for consistent fine droplets throughout. No runs, no blank spots, no larger droplets.
I shoot the epoxy, sealer and base coats at 23 psi. Clear I bump to 30 psi and spray it the way I want it to look.

Yes, I always activate my base coat.

For the drop coat I simply hold the gun 12 - 14" away and use a 50% overlap. Some guys will had reducer for the drop coat but I did not.

Shot some motobase black Friday on a pickup truck hood in the plant.
It was a new e-coated fiberglass big-block hood and we abused the whole deal.
Scuffed e-coat with 180, shot 2 coats of un-reduced epoxy, two hours later slammed two coats of the moto base.
30 minutes later shot three coats of universal with 10% retarder in a total of 15 minutes.
At 3:30 installed hood. Makes rest of truck look awful.
Very nice laying base and coverage is great.

Chad, how is the color match going to be between the old pro spray base you used to carry and the new motobase?

That looks nice, Coronet! Looking forward to pics of it completed. Love me some Dodge truck.

Came in like this. The girl just wanted it all the same color.

Going to be redoing my paint booth. Widening the filter bank by 20" and adding two more rows below. I will take the lights off the ceiling, had 45 degree bevels at the top of the side walls and install the lights there. Also adding two more fans and two lights on the side wall with the window.
I am finding it hard to see the lower quarters and also getting paint dust settling on the floor after spraying.

Thanks Coronet, the truck turned out nice. Thanks for the gun setup also. How much of a fan do you run the tekna? I know it has a large fan. Also on the drop coat, do you do it right after you finish the last coat of base or do you let the last coat flash before the drop coat?

Thanks again and I hope you post pics of the booth upgrade.

I think the fan is like 12" or so. If you look in the pictures you will see masking paper on the wall with test patterns on it.
For the drop coat I just went back over the vehicle maybe 5 minutes after second coat of base was done.

Thanks for posting the pics, Coronet. That looks really nice. Good choice of color for that truck.
What did you use to build the walls in your paint booth?

2x4s and drywall.
The biggest issue I have is turbulence created by the small filter bank. It is a positive pressure booth and shoots a stream of air down the center, however the air tends to curl back along the edges of the booth and leave paint dust on the floors and such.
Eventually I hope to have an exhaust system at the other end of the booth to draw the air out at each corner.

And sounds like you were very abusive. lol.

The biggest issue I have been seeing is that the database isn't as strong in the older colors, so in cases like that it may be tough, we have already been working at creating colors here and there when we need. On newer colors it will be on a case by case basis, overall we have been seeing really good color match though, I am actually very impressed with the line. I was really nervous when I made the switch but it's picking up right where we left off with Pro-Spray. It's been a little bit of a adjustment for us, getting use to the new toners, etc etc.

We also have the Wanda line but I have been happier with Moto-Base, however we have had a few colors that were not available in Moto-Base that were in Wanda and things went really well.
Wanda always seems to be a little cheaper but it mixes 2:1 so when you average it out is typically isn't much different.

I'm thinking when I built my booth I put the exhaust fan up a little too high. Mine is a cross flow and I also get a lot of overspray on the floor. I'm thinking about adding another fan below the one I have down low.

I found that it's best to have the exhaust as low as possible and the inlet as high as possible.
