Motobase vs Glasurit 55

A little side by side comparison today. Mostly for color match on my 68 Z/28 Matador Red.

I did not seal or really even finish this spare trunk lid so I could analyze coverage. Neither paint telegraphed any of the various primers or even the bare spot after the second coat. These both have three now. The 55 is on the rear section where the spoiler holes are.

Both layed down really flat and flashed off about the same. Without clear, the Motobase might be a better color match but I’ll reserve judgement until I shoot the SPI Universal Clear tomorrow.

DV1 clear coat gun with 1.3 and 22 psi at the digital gauge which is supposedly 28-29 at the base.

With the three red bases SPI sells you can match nearly every solid red color if you feel like doing some intermixing and testing. Premium base at a fraction of the cost. Literally like a 1/3 of the cost of Glasurit. I love Glasurit but for any solid red I will clear this is what I will do.

I did get the three SPI sample cards sent to me. Although beautiful, none were even close to the 68 Matador red. I got 4 oz of Motobase from Chad and reduced it with SPI. Close by I can get this 55 and Diamont which are the top three choices for this project in my mind for now anyway.

Yeah what I was referring to was intermixing the reds to get the color you need. But if you don't do this often it's easier to get the correct formula. That ref of yours mixing the dark and medium in the right amounts will get you very close. Would take some trial and error doing sprayouts though. Just threw it out there if anyone wants to try. That was Barry's thinking he said when he developed the three red colors SPI sells.

Been using Basf products for a considerable amount of time. My experience is that rm diamont base will match the older gm cars much better than 55 line. Just wanted to give you my experience on this.
Welcome to the forum. Curious what SPI products you are using at Dutch Boys.

I learned last week when I asked about red samples, they aren't carrying the dark red any longer.

Which one is which?

Just playing now so I better get back to work. Taped and scuffed per the discussions in my Factory Z/28 Stripe thread.

I better be careful because one of these days I’ll have to show the whole car. That might not go as well….
