New to ProSpray--question

Just picked up a gallon of 3.5 voc Prospray. Tech sheet says to mix 4:2:1. That seems like a lot of activator! I'm use to using like an ounce per quart with Dupont. Do you guys mix it according to the tech sheet?

Is that single stage?

Basecoat Activation
For vehicles requiring a high level of paint performance Pro-Spray basecoats can be activated as
follows:
8 parts Pro-Spray basecoat color
1 part Pro-Spray ICA-799, ICA-800, ICA-801, ICA-802 or ICA-803 Activator
9 parts Pro-Spray PCR-1762/1763/1764, ICR-1332/1692/1693/1694 2K High Solids Thinners

I did not find any 4-1-1. I saw single stage is 3-1-1.

Call Chad is the easiest!

Unfortunately, I'm in good old California. Different animal here. Here is the 3.5 voc version, but the gal in the shop said most just mix 1:1. Here is the link to the 3.5 version. Hope I didn't buy the wrong stuff!

Thats how I do it with the regular voc.

I do not know on the 3.5 unfortunately. I can give a call in if you would like but they would just tell me to follow the tech sheet.
If others are suggesting to mix 1:1 I would probably do that and add spi clear activator, but that's what I do with the regular voc base.

Wow, that TDS shows their 3.5 VOC basecoat mixing exactly like a single stage, unless the activator is some really weak stuff that is mostly solvent.

I'd be careful deviating from the TDS without knowing more about the product, many of these kinds of products are formulated with different resins and binders depending on the VOC level desired and the application, it might need that much hardener to work properly.

I don't know if I am reading this right, but the TDS also says to sand the primer before using base. Would that only apply if the primer is beyond the recommended window? I'm using the SPI epoxy primer, and have never sanded it prior to using other brands of base. But I have always based within a couple of days of epoxy. Should I start sanding it now with ProSpray??

The best thing to do would be to use epoxy mixed 1:1:1 as a sealer. This thin coat of epoxy will melt into underlaying primer and will provide a fresh open substrate for your base to link to. Read through the forums, you will find people basing over epoxy sealer anywhere between 20 minutes to a couple hours after spraying sealer. I shoot for 30 minutes to an hour.

Do you HAVE to do it this way? No. This is just the best way.
