norton or trizact?

My jobber carries the Norton line of abrasives, and I wanted to try some trizact on a job I'm doing. How does the Norton version compare?

yes norton has the 1/8" foam trizact discs out now. its fairly new so i have not tried it to compare. its on my list though. they only goto 3000 though. 5000 you will still need the 3m stuff.

The Norton does not have a 5000 grit finishing material. How good is the 5000 trizact? Jim, I noticed you mentioned that you use 1000 and 1500 dry cutting material, why not trizact? Have you ever used the trizact compounds? Today I used the 1000 and 1500 3m finishing film followed by 3000 trizact and buffed with 105 Meguiares, followed by 205 Meguiares, seemed to work pretty well. Wool pad, followed by black foam.

the only thing i use of 3m's is the 5000 trizact. its great stuff. you can do a whole car with 2 discs. the 3000 is terrible and their finishing film is terrible as well. it works just fine if you dont mind paying 8 times the cost of the eagle stuff and throwing on a new disc every square foot. 3m stuff is designed to cut quick and not last. good for quick denibbing on a panel in a production shop and thats it. to actually colorsand a whole car...no way. watch that 105 compound as well. it seems like it works good but its an exact copy of the perfect-it compound but has a load of scratch fillers added to it so you will get alot of dull areas and scratches coming back. do yourself a favor and use the eagle yellow film discs for 1000 and 1500 then go wet with the trizact. give the norton a go for the 3000 step. hopefully its better than the 3m version. the 5000 3m trizact is great though.

Thank Jim, so do you use the 3000 trizact and 5000 trizact?...the 3000 trizact is lousy too? What compound/polishes do you recommend, and what pads? I agree the 3m stuff is very $$, I'll have to look into the eagle sand paper and where I can get a good price on it.

dan, if your local jobber doesnt have eagle then just order it on amazon. eagle sells their stuff through there. i quit buying the 3000 trizact and use the green eagle bufflex discs. those are really good the only problem is they discontinued them in the wet version. now they have a dry version of it which i dont know how that works. i cant imagine 3000 grit dry being very effective but who knows. also i dont think there is any reason the dry cant be used wet if i really wanted to. if Norton's 3000 does a good job and lasts then ill just switch to that. the 3m 3000 is terrible. it wears out so fast and its tricky because you dont realize its worn out and doing nothing. their 5000 is great. 2 discs will do a whole car but the 3000 you'll get maybe 1 panel and its wiped and going back to the cost of it....if it were cheap stuff i would have no problems with it but 3m charges a premium because their stuff is supposed to be better not worse. for compound i use the 3m version of the 105 which is their perfect-it stuff. in the purple bottle or jug. its exactly the same as the 105 you have there but less fillers. it still does have some in it but nowhere near as bad.

Thanks Jim, very helpful information. I did notice that the two doors that I buffed, the second one was much harder to buff out, must be due to the fact that I tried to use the same piece of 3000 trizact on it. I also bought a box of Norton, so I'll try that next. The 3m perfect it purple bottle, do you mean the bottles labeled 1-3? Do you use all 3? What do you use for buffing pads? I'm using wool, followed by black foam, both by Meguiares. My buffer is a variable speed Dewalt rotary buffer, works well, but is kind of a back breaker after a few panels. I'm thinking of maybe a Flex rotary?...what do you use? Thanks again Jim! Dan.

the compound is 06085 but they upgraded it to a newer version awhile back which i tried but havent bought any yet. the new stuff is in the link. i do use the matching polish. its a color coded system. compound is white, black is the polish. i compound mostly with foam but occasionally with wool too. i polish only with foam. i use the matching black waffle pad for the polish. my buffer i use the good old trust makita. i have had the same one for 10 years and its still rockin. as for the 3000, thats exactly what happens. it quits working after about 6-8 sqft or so but it keeps making foam on the panel so you think its working but its really doing nothing. let me know if you see a difference with the norton discs. i would like to hear some feedback.

Hi Jim, I will let you know how the Norton works out compared to the 3000 trizact, I wasn't impressed with the 3000 either, as I mentioned one disc really only lasted for one door. I will look into the 3m compounds, I used to use the old pefect-it 2 system years back. My old Dewalt buffer is still running strong too, but kinda heavy...but not sure I want to spend the money for a flex buffer either. I looked at the link that you attached, and I believe they have 1-3 system, 1 being the cutting compound and 3 being the finish glaze. Do you use 3m buffing pads? So many aftermarket companies out there now, like chemical guys and lake country stuff...not sure how their compounds or pads are....btw, my new 3" Dynabrade is great! works well around edges and small parts.

the #3 polish is the ultrafina polish which i have but rarely use. it uses the blue pad. i use the matching pads for the polish steps but i dont for compound. i have been using the lake country yellow foam pads for about 10 years now. they were smaller 7" dia i think. the specific one i use have been discontinued long ago but im sure they have something else avail.

Thanks Jim, I have so many buffing pads/systems from over the years, it gets overwhelming. Do you bother with the 3" trizact? I'm thinking things that require that small of a pad, I can quickly do by hand.
