old mag wheel cleaning

Backyard hack here.
I painted some old magnesium motorcycle rims with similar "vanes" as those rims. I used axel grease on my fingers and used qtips to get in tighter places. I painted it all and wiped the paint from the "vanes" afterwards, paint came right off. YMMV

the wheels were blasted correct? if so then you need to sand all the areas your trying to polish to get the blasting texture out of it. you'll need to get it up to about 600-1200 grit then polish with some wheels and rouge. once polished you need to degrease the wheels, mask the polished areas, sand up to the tape line then paint. paint is the last step

yes sir, but he soda blasted the front of the spokes so they arent to rough like the backs he used glass on.

eh.......been thinking. i did not fully think through polishing. using any kind of broad pad seems dumb. would i be better off using the edge of a narrow wheel? what to turn it with? maybe the big buffer would work after all?
i kinda need some pointers on this.
its gonna be nasty tomorrow morning, and i need some other things any way, so gonna look for that tape, or as near as i can find. what should i be looking for as far as wheels? Lizer, what about the flitz you were talking about? good stuff?

Jim, im a little concerned about contamination. i dont know what is in the buffing compound or what is need to clean it off? on the other hand, it may not be a good idea to introduce these same elements to fresh paint? would 700 be a sufficient last step after buffing?

After buffing I would wash throughly with Dawn, then SPI 700, followed up with SPI 710. Then tape off and paint Might be overkill but overkill never hurt a paint job.

You can slow a die grinder down to whatever rpm you want, just install a cheater valve before the die grinder.
hmm.........wonder if it would still have enough power? it may. i ordered a bunch of supplies today. i rode around an hour, no one nearby has any thing in stock, not even half inch tape. i would support local vendors if they would support me.
