painting chrome??

This may be a silly question and I'm still a ways away from it but I have been pondering the idea of, if possible, painting the chrome on my 69 stang. I think that if the pieces were to be roughed up a bit with 80 grit or so it'd work but maybe the chrome really won't allow anything to stick very well?? The thought is that since the car is dark blue that maybe black trim would maybe make a classy touch and I havnt seen any powder coat that has quite the sheen of real paint. Any ideas??

you can paint chrome. if your chrome is pitted, flaking or failing in any way you cant expect paint to lock that down. if your chrome is good you need to prep it like any other metal. i personally use an extremely fine grit of crushed glass and i blast it. all it does is take the shine off it so makes it a matte finish. gives it that dull nickel look. once its prepped you need to epoxy it extremely well then you can paint as normal. another option and this is better if your chrome is not that great, is to prep it like i said before then have it powder epoxy primed. you can sand that and paint as normal.

I have painted chrome on an old Pontiac I am kinda restoring. The car has a wide piece of chrome down the middle of the hood. It was in very poor shape, lots of pitting. I didn't want to spend money for rechrome and I wasn't going to put it back on the car in such sad shape. I sanded with 80 grit, primered with epoxy then filled in the pits with body fill and sanded smooth just like you would regular metal. Another coat of epoxy just for good measure and then I used a single stage paint. I wasn't expecting much but it came out really good. It has been on the car for over a year and still looks good.

I am putting ghost boss stripes on my stang. I have shaved and debadged most of the car and the few pieces I've kept, grill trim, drip rails, and door handles I was going to paint spi black and put the same intercoat ghost over it. Hopefully it'll work out.

Good chrome you can sand very well with 150 DA, clean with SPI #700 and epoxy prime. Be prepared to go through a lot of sandpaper, as the chrome dulls it fast and you don't want to use dull sandpaper, it will polish instead of abrade.

Bad chrome should be blasted, imo.

Excellent. Thanks for the help guys. Its the original 1969 chrome and some is pitted but no flaking. I think I'll drag it to work and blast it there.(they have glass in their booth) and then see what I can't tear up after that.
