painting motorcycle tank filler neck

R

richrd

I have seen two other norton tanks which had the inner filler necks painted like this. one is fine after two years and the other failed completely on the first tank of gas.

my policy has been to stop the paint half way up the outside.

Any advice?

You need to seal the edge of the paint where there is contact with fuel, JimC is the resident bike pro here and I think he uses a fuel tank liner brushed around the edge to seal it all up. I've had good luck keeping the paint edge just outside the gasket contact area and using SPI epoxy to do the same.

yes you can seal the edge with novalac epoxy. its epoxy tank liner from www.caswell.com or you can get single mix packets of it. it was called lip seal but not sure if thats around anymore or not. the other thing is to make sure you use epoxy primer on the tank. try to keep 2k primer from inside the neck. also make sure your basecoat is activated.

crash, The big name m/c painter around here does it that way, and I know of one that has two years on it. another was done that way down in La. and it wicked up to the top of the tank and bubbled the paint the first time we put gas in it.

I filled this one to the brim and let it sit for a month as a torture test. considering all the other poor work on this job, I still don't trust it.

What JimC does. The Novalac acts as an impervious seal between the layers of material and bare metal.

BTW, I'm sorry if my post came off as insulting. It's just my opinion.

I didn't paint it so I can't be insulted. I ust need to know how to do it right.
