Prepping for epoxy with 80 grit roloc disc?

As an alternative to sandblasting, could you use a 3" grinder with an 80 grit disc to give your metal " Tooth" ?

I also have a 3m belt sander that gets into hard to reach areas.

I understand that an 80 Grit DA scratch works well, just am curious about the 80 grit grinder discs.

Thanks for anyone who takes time to reply!

I use a 80 grit Roloc before I start bodywork most every time
to remove paint and rust to get to shiny metal before filler.
It has worked great for me.
The fast speed of my air sander seems to leave a pretty smooth
finish for 80 grit. I like it.

Thanks! Do you epoxy first or put body filler on bare metal?

If you are planning to epoxy over the 80 grit roloc you're much better off doing what everyone else does and DA it with 80 grit. If you are going to put filler over bare metal then do what JC stated.

Thank you- I would like to ask, is this and adhesion issue or just the fact that a grinder will be more aggressive than a DA? I appreciate the input.

A grinder with a Roloc disc can be quite aggressive and leave scratches that will take many coats of epoxy to fill. A DA is much safer IMHO.

I agree with the above, it's a little coarse for stripping just to get the paint off.
I'm usually working a wrinkled body and the rolocs get in the little nooks and crannies
real good, and they grind off my weld studs nicely.
But really, on just taking paint off to the metal for priming, I find my
electric buffer is much quicker than my air tools and gives my compressor a rest.
A 6" pad on my buffer with a 80 grit sanding disc leaves it real smooth and
takes it off really fast. I run it about 2200 RPM's.

As far as priming before filler-I usually don't for small collision repair
only because of saving some time. It's fine either way though.
