On my motorcycle tank I have two coats of epoxy and three coats of 2k primer. The feel of the tank is a grainy smooth, does that make sense? I can see more dings in it now than before, I knew the ding would show after primer I just didn't think it would take five coats. I can still see the body work rings under the primer. I know I need to block sand, but what should do after that, can I put z-grip body filler on the 2k if needed? I may be wrong but I'm thinking if I block sand, the body filler rings will somewhat disappear. They look like they're lower than the rest of the 2k primer, but don't feel like it. I would post pics but I don't think they would do any good, there on the phone and my phone sucks.

Using filler over 2k can be done in small amounts, but a good process would avoid this practice.

Tell us a bit more about the process used. It sounds like you used some filler already? What sand paper grits have you used, and what are you planning to use next? Have you used guide coat?

If you have dings or dents that need filled at this point, I would sand them pretty aggressively to get as much 2k out as possible before you fill them.

I had some hiccups through out the process, mainly because I didn't find the company/ forum in till I already done my damage. I have z-grip on the bare metal, following there directions, then I put etching primer on top of that, following directions. Then I sprayed u-pol high build primer on top of that. Disaster! I found this company. I sanded almost everything down to bare metal except for the three spots with z-grip. I cleaned the bare metal and the body filler with a harsh wax and grease remover and let it sit out in the sun for a few hours. Next I sprayed with two coats of epoxy and forgot to drain the compressor. So I got some better guns and a DeVilbiss moisture snake filter. I sanded the bumps out of the epoxy and put down one more layer, this was about a week or two after the moisture mistake. I put body filler on top of the epoxy then I used 320 on a block and here and there 220 on a da. I went to the metal so I gave it anther coating of epoxy. So I guess I have four coatings of epoxy and three of 2k. I used advanced 2k, sprayed it with a 1.7 gun waiting 10min between coatings. That's where I am now. Anything else? Oh... next I plan on spraying some guide coat and block sanding with 400. A lot of mistakes have been made and hopefully they want be repeated. First real paint project.

If you are planning to do much painting in the future, plan on getting a proper compressor / filtration setup. Guide coat is a good idea. However, I would start sanding with 180, not 400 for two reasons. One, you have several coats of 2k on the tank right now. You don't want to leave any more material on there than what is needed. 180 will sand off excess primer much better. Secondly, 400 is not going to cut off waves like 180 would. Once it sands evenly with 180, then spray another coat of primer and sand it with 400.

What is Advanced 2K? I hope it is not something you bought at Advanced Auto. Get SPI 2k. Their products are the best at ANY price.

I have a good compressor. I meant advantage 2k. So if I sand with 180 then prime it again what kind of primer? Thanks Strum456.

I kind of get it now, I'll block sand and see if I need to add more 2k for more block sanding and or body filler, then seal it.
