Removing acid rain spots

I've got a 20yr old mustang that has some spots from acid rain I guess, you can see the outline of the drops all over the car. I'd like to bring the finish back as good as I possibly can. First I tried polishing compound and that didnt do anything, then I tried rubbing compound which helped a little. This is using my small orbital buffer btw. I'm thinking about wet sanding the whole car, but I've never done more than some small spots. How should it be done? What grit paper? Use a block or not? Any suggestions? Thanks

Here are my thoughts. I wouldn't want to sand on anything I didn't paint myself. Is it the factory paint? And if you were to wet sand it, you would need something more than a random orbital buffer to buff it. Since you would have to get another buffer anyway, I would suggest going ahead and buying/borrowing one and start with that rather than sanding anything yet. Using a couple of different pads/compounds I would start with the least aggressive and work towards the most aggressive until you get the results you want. You don't want to take off any more material that you have to.

Depending how bad the etch is you may need to wetsand and polish out and like pointed out you just don't know what kind and how much material you have to work with.

First thing to try is a clay bar, any autozone, advanced part store will have them, if not bad they will work BUTTTTT!!!!!.
Worth a try.

Ya it is factory paint and I have used the clay on it quite abit. Icould try the high speed buffer with polishing compound first I guess
