Restoring magnesium aluminum alloy wheels

Hey guys,

I have some Cromodora wheels from a 1974 Fiat. These are the magnesium/aluminum alloy wheels. Still have some of the factory paint (pictures attached) and I need to paint them. I've read so many different opinions and just wanted to get yours. I'm thinking just solvent based and then waterborne wax and grease remover to clean them. 80 grit by hand then epoxy. Light filler work to smooth them out. Primer, base/clear. Am I on the right path?

Thanks.

Dave

Have you thought about some form of media blasting? If they were mine I'd have them glass beaded. Would make for a nicer result when finished. Other than that your steps are right on.

x2 you always blast wheels. if you put in 8hours per wheel, there is no way you are going to prep those anywhere close to what you would get with 5-10 min of blasting. blast then epoxy then a single stage or bc/cc.

Just epoxy very quickly. Magnesium oxides faster than aluminum. Just letting them sit a few days before priming is going to start to powder.

Thanks guys. I've heard mixed reviews on blasting magnesium because as anotheridiot said they do oxidize faster than aluminum. I have access to a blaster. I could glass bead them and have them in epoxy within an hour. That's the route I'll take. Thanks again.
