Rust Pits

ver that. What is a good product to fill rust pits like this? Thanks.

Very clean and well prepped surface. Great job!

Whatever filler you use, I'll just about guarantee it won't be coming off due to all those filler grabbing pockets.

Way better than measly little 80 grit scratches :)

I see polished metal, and if you wet it with ospho it will show you the rust that is still there. I don't know if epoxy will take care of it or not.

The areas with the pits were sand blasted but the parts then sat for about eight months. Little specs of rust appeared so I went over them with a wire brush on a 4-1/2" grinder. Now I'm going to seal with epoxy and would like to know what's the best product to fill these small pits after epoxy.

I've had delamination issues with wire-wheel prepped surfaces. I will never prime over such a surface, instead sanding with 80 before coating. I don't know the reason, but I believe the wire polishes the surface and might make it a bit "slippery." Better to have a sharp scratch, imo.

It also disguises the rust under it, instead of removing it. When you wet it with a rust remover it will turn black again.

I’ve seen this too. The phosphate will polish up, (with a wire wheel), to look just like metal. When you pick at it with a scribe, more than likely you’ll find brown rust.

Well like the others said, wire wheel prep is prob the next worse thing to prime over after acid, there’s no grit for the material to bind to. No problem though, hit with 80 grit before priming. I use a spot blaster to give a profile to the pits too.

Then epoxy and a skim coat of whatever filler you like to use. You’ll get there faster with filler vs spraying anything.
