I was thinking about shooting Sherman Williams Dimension base coat then spi universal clear, will that work out ok? Or should I use a different base. I am on a budget.

I've sprayed lower cost base then Universal and had no problems. The key is to let the base flash off completely (might take several hours to overnight with real cheap bases). Also, activate basecoat with some Universal Clearcoat activator (about 5% should do it or 1-2 oz. per sprayable quart). This will help the basecoats adhesion and longterm durabilty.

If it's a metallic, DON"T DO IT! I say that as a Dimension user with fairly extensive experience.

However, if it is a solid color, it will probably work well on an all-over paint job. Be sure to specify 6B, their higher solids version. Use SPI reducer in the basecoat, along with 5% clear activator to the ready-to-spray mix.
