My local jobber is going to be getting a Sherwin Williams Matrix system base coat paint , have any of you used it? If you have used it what is your opinions on it?

I've used it on a couple of jobs at my old work. Seemed decent to me. Coverage was really good and laid out nice. This chevelle was all Matrix minus the clear.

I honestly liked how that base sprayed from what I remember. I don't have it anywhere local to me so I hadn't given it much thought since I left that job. Only used it a couple of times so I cant really give an opinion on a full array of colors.

I know for me it covered far better than DBC that was the standard that we used in that shop.

If you do a search here you will find a lot of discussion about Matrix. IIRC it originially was ripped off PPG DBU after PPG mistakenly let their patent expire(?). Shine is not a fan.

brittle as hell. rock chips horribly . clear died back really bad. used it on 2 then threw the rest in the trash. it was a rip off brand and sold off. don't know who owns it now and don't care.

I’ve used the basecoat. I’ve never had any real issues with it. Like anything sometimes you have color match issues. But it sprayed decent and covered decent. Pretty sure they’re owned by valspar now or sherwin I forget they’re all the same now. They own quite a few lines these days. Trying to eat up competition I guess.

Sherwin had many basecoat issues, one major being price, so they bought out Matrix, ProSpray, Valspar, House of Color, etc. to raise prices closer to theirs. They sure didn't improve them, quite the opposite to "even" them out.
